Our Story

A Country Pub with a Passion for Cooking

Y Ffarmers sits at the centre of the village of Llanfihangel y Creuddyn, a few miles east of Aberystwyth in the rolling hills of Ceredigion. It is, at its heart, a proper Welsh country pub — and it always will be.

What sets us apart is the kitchen. Head chef and proprietors have built a reputation throughout West Wales for food that is ambitious without being pretentious, sophisticated without losing sight of comfort. We believe that the best meal is one that feels right for the place and the people sharing it.

The dining room and bar area retain all the character you would expect of a centuries-old Welsh farmhouse pub: exposed stone walls, low beams, flagstone floors, and the centrepiece of it all — a great, roaring log fire that warms the room from October through to spring.

Welsh is spoken and cherished here. You’ll hear it across the bar, read it on our menus, and feel it in the spirit of the place. Mae croeso cynnes i bawb — a warm welcome to all.

Heritage & Place

Rooted in Ceredigion

Llanfihangel y Creuddyn is one of those quietly beautiful Welsh villages that rewards those who seek it out. Surrounded by the Cambrian Mountains, threaded by clear streams and ancient drovers’ lanes, this landscape has shaped everything about how we cook and how we think about food.

Our menu changes with the seasons and with what our trusted producers have to offer. In spring, wild garlic from the woodland margins. In summer, soft fruits and salad leaves from neighbouring farms. In autumn, game from the surrounding estates and root vegetables pulled from Ceredigion’s red earth. In winter, long-braised dishes and hearty soups that warm you from the inside out.

This connection between landscape, producer, and plate is not a marketing concept for us. It is simply how things have always been done in a community like this, and how they will continue to be done at Y Ffarmers.

Our Philosophy

Honest Food, Cooked with Care

We do not subscribe to trends. We do not chase scores or seek the spotlight. What we do believe in, fiercely, is that exceptional ingredients treated with skill and respect make for exceptional food. It really is that simple.

Our chefs have spent years building relationships with the farmers, fishermen, smallholders, and foragers who supply us. That trust is reflected in every dish that leaves our kitchen.

Seasonal by Default We work with what the season offers. The menu is never static.
Local First, Always If it can be sourced from Ceredigion or the surrounding counties, it will be.
Nothing Wasted Every part of every ingredient is considered. Sustainability is not optional.
A Welsh Kitchen We celebrate Welsh culinary identity: laverbread, salt marsh lamb, cawl, bara brith.

The Pub

Come In from the Cold

A proper Welsh country pub should feel like an extension of home. At Y Ffarmers, that is exactly what we have always aimed to offer.

The Log Fires
Two open fires, lit from October through April (and whenever the mood demands it), cast a warm glow across the bar and dining room. There is no better place to sit with a pint and a bowl of soup on a wet Welsh afternoon.
The Bar
Pull up a stool at the bar and you’ll find well-kept real ales from Welsh breweries alongside a thoughtful selection of wines, spirits, and soft drinks. The bar is the beating heart of any good village pub, and ours is no exception.
The Dining Room
Forty covers in a space that feels intimate rather than cramped. Original stone walls, exposed oak beams, and candlelit tables create an atmosphere that is warm, relaxed, and utterly conducive to good conversation and unhurried dining.
The Garden
When the Ceredigion sun makes one of its glorious appearances, our south-facing garden terrace opens up. Surrounded by the village and the hills beyond, it is a very fine place to spend a summer afternoon.

What Our Guests Say

Heard Around the Table

“We drove an hour to get here and would happily drive two. The lamb was the finest I have eaten in Wales — pink, rested, and full of flavour. The log fire, the local ales, the welcome: everything was exactly as a great Welsh country pub should be.”
Jonathan R.

“Ceredigion’s best-kept secret — although that secret is very much out. The bara brith bread and butter pudding alone is worth making the trip. An extraordinary restaurant in an extraordinary setting. We will be back very soon.”
Sarah & Michael T.
Tripadvisor • January 2025
“We held our wedding breakfast here for thirty guests and it was flawless. The team were warm, professional, and entirely Welsh-speaking for our guests from the north. The food was outstanding and the setting unforgettable.”
Sioned & Rhys M.
Private Event • October 2024
“The Sunday lunch here is a proper institution. Arrived in the rain, welcomed with warmth, left in a happy daze. The Ceredigion beef was magnificent. The sticky toffee pudding was magnificent. Everything was magnificent.”
David H.

“Taken my family here four times now and the standard never drops. Clever, seasonal cooking using produce I can trace back to farms I’ve driven past. This is what eating in Wales should be. Brilliant.”
Claire F.

“The wine dinner in February was a highlight of our year. Six beautifully conceived courses, wines chosen with real intelligence, and a team that made every guest feel completely at ease. What a place.”
