Coasteering, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, surf lessons and gorge walking on one of Britain's most spectacular stretches of coastline. Expert guides. All abilities welcome.
We are a team of passionate watersports instructors and outdoor guides based in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. Founded over a decade ago, West Coast Wales has grown from a small surf school into West Wales's premier multi-activity adventure provider.
The wild, exposed coastline of Cardigan Bay is our classroom. Dramatic sea cliffs, hidden coves, rolling Atlantic swell, and the unspoiled beauty of mid-Wales combine to create an adventure setting like no other in Britain. Whether you are looking for an adrenaline-fuelled day out or a gentle introduction to the sea, we have an experience crafted for you.
All our guides hold current National Governing Body qualifications and hold full public liability insurance.
From first-timers to seasoned adventurers, we tailor every session to your group's experience and comfort.
Wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets, boards, and kayaks — all included. Just turn up ready to get wet.
We keep instructor-to-participant ratios low, ensuring a personal, safe experience every time.
Every activity takes place on or alongside the Cardigan Bay coastline. Expert instruction, premium equipment, and scenery that simply cannot be replicated.
Scramble, swim, jump, and traverse sea cliffs and rocky headlands with your wetsuit on. The original coastal adventure — raw, physical, and utterly unforgettable on the Ceredigion coast.
Paddle sea caves, explore hidden inlets, and encounter Cardigan Bay's famous dolphin population from the water.
Find your balance on flat-water bays or gentle surf. SUP is the fastest-growing watersport in Britain — try it on the best stretch of Welsh coastline.
West Wales receives consistent Atlantic swell year-round. From your first green wave to refining your pop-up, our surf instructors will get you riding.
Wade, scramble, and plunge through the spectacular river gorges of mid-Wales. A natural adventure playground hidden just inland from the coast.
The original adventure sport, invented on the Welsh coast. Coasteering combines swimming, scrambling, and cliff jumping into one exhilarating package.
Our coasteering routes wind along the rugged Ceredigion coastline north and south of Aberystwyth. You will traverse wave-cut rock platforms, swim through narrow sea channels, scramble up barnacled crags, and leap from ledges ranging from a gentle 2-metre splash to a stomach-dropping 8-metre plunge — entirely at your own pace.
"Every jump is your choice. There is zero pressure. That is what makes it so addictive — you push your own boundaries, in your own time."
What's included: Full wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet, neoprene gloves and boots. Full pre-session safety briefing. Qualified coasteering leader throughout.
Book CoasteeringCardigan Bay is one of Europe's largest bays and one of Britain's finest sea kayaking destinations. Explore it on a guided paddle with West Coast Wales.
Our sea kayaking sessions launch from sheltered beaches on the outskirts of Aberystwyth and head along a coastline of sandstone cliffs, sea caves, and quiet shingle coves that are unreachable on foot. On calm days, the glassy water of the bay frames the Cambrian Mountains to the east in a panorama that stops paddlers mid-stroke.
Cardigan Bay is home to Europe's largest population of wild bottlenose dolphins. Encounters are never guaranteed, but sightings from our kayaks are a regular and genuinely extraordinary occurrence.
Simple to learn, endlessly rewarding. Stand-up paddleboarding gets you upright on the water within minutes, delivering a full-body workout and spectacular views simultaneously.
We run SUP sessions from sheltered coves and harbour areas around Aberystwyth, making them ideal for beginners, families, and those who want a slightly calmer on-water experience. For those after more of a challenge, we also offer wave SUP sessions when Atlantic swells roll into the bay.
West Wales is a genuine surfing destination. Borth, Aberystwyth, and the exposed beaches around Cardigan Bay receive quality Atlantic swell throughout the year.
Our qualified surf coaches run lessons for absolute beginners through to intermediate surfers looking to progress their technique. All lessons begin on the sand with pop-up practice and ocean awareness, before heading into the surf under close supervision.
We select surf spots based on the day's conditions — your coaches will choose the ideal beach on the morning of your session to match swell size and your group's ability. We chase the best waves so you don't have to.
Head inland and discover a hidden world of cascading waterfalls, deep plunge pools, and polished rock chutes carved by millions of years of Welsh rainfall.
Gorge walking — or ghyll scrambling as it's known in some regions — is the freshwater equivalent of coasteering. You follow a river upstream through its gorge, scrambling over boulders, sliding down natural water chutes, plunging into crystal-clear pools, and working your way past waterfalls as a team.
The river valleys of Ceredigion and Snowdonia's southern flanks offer spectacular gorge terrain within easy reach of Aberystwyth. This activity is particularly well-suited to families, schools, and corporate groups looking for something genuinely different.
Whether you are celebrating, bonding, or building a team — West Coast Wales delivers experiences that groups talk about for years.
Forget the same old pub crawl. Launch the groom's last chapter of freedom with something that tests you, bonds you, and gives you a story worth telling.

"We did the half-day coasteering and SUP combo for my boyfriend's birthday. Every single person in our group of twelve had an absolute blast. The instructors were funny, knowledgeable, and incredibly patient with those of us who were nervous about the cliff jumps. Would book again without hesitation."
"Our corporate team building day with West Coast Wales was phenomenal. Thirty-two of us descended on Aberystwyth for a full-day kayaking and gorge walking programme. The team came back to the office the following week noticeably more connected. Worth every penny and then some."
"My hen do was absolutely perfect. We had a mix of confident swimmers and complete novices in the group, and the guides were brilliant at making everyone feel comfortable. The coasteering was the highlight of the whole weekend — I cried with laughter at the cliff jumps. Highly, highly recommended."

Adventure and safety are not opposites. At West Coast Wales, rigorous safety management is the invisible backbone of every exhilarating moment we deliver.
Before any session begins, our instructors conduct thorough environmental assessments, reviewing tide states, weather windows, swell height, and hazard conditions. We carry comprehensive first aid equipment including oxygen, and all instructors hold current first aid certifications appropriate to their environment.
We operate under formal risk management systems reviewed annually. Our equipment is inspected before every session and replaced on a rolling schedule. We do not compromise on kit quality — our wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and helmets are all purpose-built for the activities we run.
"We have never had a serious incident. That is not luck. It is a direct result of the systems, training, and culture we have built over twelve years."
Our base is in Aberystwyth, the unofficial capital of mid-Wales and one of the most beautifully situated towns on the Welsh coast.
