Chapter One

The Beginning

It Started With a Love of Dogs

Topsy's was born from something beautifully simple: a genuine, deep-rooted love of dogs and the belief that grooming should be a calm, caring experience rather than a stressful ordeal. What began as helping friends and neighbours with their furry companions grew into a fully qualified home grooming studio in the heart of Pembrokeshire.

The decision to study for the AIM Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming was not about ticking a box. It was about mastering every technique, understanding coat science, learning canine behaviour, and being able to offer each dog the precise care their breed and temperament demands.

The Studio

A Home, Not a Factory

There is something fundamentally different about a home grooming studio. No barking from a dozen kennels. No echoing industrial fans. No revolving door of stressed dogs waiting their turn. At Topsy's, your dog is the only appointment, the only focus, the only guest.

The studio is purpose-fitted with professional-grade equipment but set within the warmth and quiet of a home environment. Dogs who have been anxious at larger salons often arrive tense and leave utterly relaxed. That transformation is what makes this work so rewarding.

From the non-slip flooring to the gentle warm water, every detail has been considered for your dog's comfort and safety.

Your Visit

The Topsy's Experience

1

Arrival and Settle

Your dog arrives and gets time to sniff around the studio, meet me, and feel comfortable. No rushing straight onto the table. First impressions matter, especially for a dog.

2

Assessment and Chat

We discuss the style you want, any skin concerns or sensitivities, and I assess the coat condition. For first-time visitors, I take extra time to understand your dog's temperament.

3

Pre-Groom Prep

Thorough brush through to remove tangles and loose coat. Nails clipped, ears checked, and any mats carefully addressed before the bath. This groundwork is essential.

4

Bath Time

Warm water, professional shampoo matched to coat and skin type. A thorough clean and rinse with plenty of reassurance. Some dogs learn to love this part.

5

Dry and Style

Professional blow dry using appropriate dryer speed and heat. Then the styling: clipping, scissoring, or hand stripping to achieve the perfect finish for your dog's coat type.

6

Final Touches

Finishing checks for symmetry. A bandana or bow if you fancy it. Then collection time, where most owners cannot quite believe the transformation. That is my favourite moment.

Our Commitment

The Topsy's Promise

One to One

Your dog receives my complete and undivided attention throughout the entire grooming session. No other dogs in the studio. No distractions.

No Cages

There are no cages or crates in this studio. Your dog is never confined. They are free to move around, relax, and feel at home.

Patience Always

Nervous dogs get breaks. Puppies get extra gentleness. Senior dogs get whatever time they need. Rushing has no place in good grooming.

Honest Communication

You will always know what to expect before, during, and after the groom. If I spot a skin issue or recommend a different style, I will tell you why.

Kind Words

What Clients Say

"Our Cockapoo, Mabel, used to tremble at the groomers. The difference at Topsy's is night and day. The calm home environment makes all the difference. Mabel actually wags her tail when we arrive now."

Claire W. / Pembrokeshire
Cockapoo owner

"I cannot recommend Topsy's enough. The level of skill and patience shown with our elderly Westie was remarkable. She has arthritis and they adjusted everything to keep her comfortable. Beautifully groomed every time."

Gareth P. / Narberth
West Highland Terrier owner

"Finally found a groomer who understands Poodle coats properly. The scissor work is immaculate and you can tell they have put the time into learning proper technique. Worth every penny."

Rachel T. / Haverfordwest
Miniature Poodle owner

"Brought our rescue Lurcher for a bath and tidy. She is very nervous around new people but Topsy's took it so slowly, giving her treats and just letting her settle. She came out looking gorgeous and actually relaxed. Amazing."

Sian M. / Tenby

Common Questions

Things You Might Wonder

How far in advance should I book? +

I recommend booking at least one to two weeks ahead, though availability varies by season. Spring and summer are the busiest times as everyone wants their dogs trimmed for the warmer weather. Regular clients can book their next appointment at the end of each session to secure their preferred slot.

What if my dog is very anxious or reactive? +

This is something I handle regularly and with great care. The home studio environment naturally helps anxious dogs feel calmer. I take everything at the dog's pace, use lots of positive reinforcement, and will break the groom into shorter sessions if needed. Please mention any behavioural concerns when booking so I can prepare accordingly.

When can puppies have their first groom? +

Puppies can visit from around 12 to 14 weeks, once they have had their second vaccination and it has had a few days to take effect. The earlier they start, the better. Puppy introduction sessions are short, gentle, and focused entirely on making grooming a positive experience for life.

How long does a full groom take? +

A full groom typically takes between one and a half to three hours depending on breed, size, coat condition, and the style requested. I never rush. If a dog needs a break, they get one. I will give you an estimated collection time when you drop off.

Do you cater for older dogs with mobility issues? +

Absolutely. Senior dogs and those with mobility challenges receive adapted care. I adjust table heights, minimise standing time, and work gently around any sore joints or medical conditions. Canine first aid training means I am prepared for any situation that may arise with older dogs.

What products do you use? +

I use professional-grade, dog-specific shampoos and conditioners chosen for each individual coat and skin type. For dogs with sensitive skin, I carry hypoallergenic and medicated options. All products are kind, effective, and chosen because they genuinely work, not because of branding.
