Our Philosophy

Every dog that walks through our door is treated like our own. No rushed appointments. No assembly lines. Just one dog, one groomer, one calm and focused session from start to finish.

We built Top Dog Grooming Studio because Pembrokeshire deserved a space where grooming is not just maintenance but genuine care. A studio where nervous dogs find patience, where elderly dogs find gentleness, and where every pup leaves with that unmistakable swagger.

The Process

01

Consultation

We discuss your dog's needs, coat condition, any skin sensitivities, and your preferred style. First-time dogs get extra time for us to assess temperament and comfort levels.

02

Pre-Groom

Thorough brush out to remove loose undercoat and identify any mats or problem areas. Nails clipped, ears checked. This prep work makes all the difference to the final result.

03

Bath + Style

Professional shampoo and conditioner matched to coat type. Warm water, gentle handling. Then the blow dry and styling, whether that is a breed-standard trim or a custom look you have in mind.

04

Final Check

Final once-over for symmetry and finish. A spritz of dog-safe cologne if you would like it. Then the moment you have been waiting for: collection. Prepare for the tail wags.

What They Say

* * * * *

"Our Cockapoo, Biscuit, used to dread the groomers. Since switching to Top Dog, she actually gets excited when we pull up. The patience they show with nervous dogs is remarkable."

Sarah M. - Haverfordwest
* * * * *

"Absolute perfection every single time. My Westie comes out looking like a show dog. The hand stripping is exceptional and you can tell they genuinely love what they do."

David L. - Narberth
* * * * *

"We brought our rescue Staffie in for a bath and tidy. They were so gentle with her. Explained everything they were doing and gave us great coat care tips to take home."

Emma R. - Milford Haven

"Three dogs, three very different coats, and they nail it every time. The Springer gets a full groom, the Lab a bath and dry, and the Border Terrier a hand strip. Recommend to everyone."

Questions + Answers

How often should my dog be groomed? +

It depends on the breed and coat type. Most dogs benefit from a full groom every 6-8 weeks. Double-coated breeds may need a bath and blow-out every 8-10 weeks. Curly and wool-coated breeds like Poodles and Doodles need grooming every 4-6 weeks to prevent matting. We will advise on the best schedule at your first appointment.

Can I stay with my dog during grooming? +

We find most dogs settle much better without their owner present. Dogs often perform or become anxious when they can see you but cannot get to you. We are happy to send photos during the groom and you are welcome to wait nearby. For puppy intro sessions, we may invite you in briefly.

My dog is very nervous. Can you still groom them? +

Absolutely. We specialise in building confidence with nervous dogs. We take it slowly, use lots of positive reinforcement, and never force the process. Some very anxious dogs benefit from shorter, more frequent sessions to build up trust gradually. Please let us know when booking so we can allocate extra time.

Do you groom older or disabled dogs? +

Yes, and we take particular care with senior and less mobile dogs. Our hydraulic table adjusts to a comfortable height and we can adapt our process for dogs with arthritis, hip issues, or other conditions. We work gently and efficiently to minimise standing time.

What should I do to prepare my dog for grooming? +

A short walk beforehand helps them arrive calm. Do not bathe them before the appointment as we need to see the coat in its natural state. Let us know about any lumps, bumps, sore spots or recent vet treatments. And please arrive on time so we can keep to schedule for all our clients.

What happens if my dog has severely matted fur? +

We will always try to save as much coat as possible. However, if the matting is tight to the skin, the kindest and safest option is to clip the coat short. Pulling out tight mats causes pain and skin damage. We will always discuss options with you before proceeding and advise on a maintenance plan going forward.
