Local Welsh Slate

A craft rooted
in Welsh stone

We are a small, independent workshop nestled in the Ceredigion countryside a few miles from Aberystwyth. Everything we make begins as a raw piece of Welsh slate and ends as something that will last a lifetime.

Welsh slate has been quarried and crafted in this part of the world for centuries. We carry that tradition forward, working with the same material that once roofed the towns and villages of Britain — only now shaped into objects for the home, for celebrations, and for the moments that deserve to be remembered.

We do not use mass-production machinery. Each piece is cut, ground and engraved by hand in our workshop, which means no two pieces are ever identical. The natural grain, the faint silver seams, the slight variation in depth and tone — these are features, not flaws.

"Slate is one of the few materials that improves with age. It weathers graciously, keeps its markings sharp, and carries a sense of permanence that modern materials simply cannot replicate."

A material with
deep Welsh roots

Wales is home to some of the finest slate in the world. The Ceredigion region, along with the famous quarries of Snowdonia to the north, has supplied slate to builders, craftspeople and artists for over five hundred years.

The slate we use is sourced within Wales wherever possible — from quarries that have supplied the craft trade for generations. When we cut a piece, we are working with something formed over four hundred million years ago during the Lower Palaeozoic era. It is not a material to be rushed.

From Raw Slate to Finished Piece

Selection

We hand-select each slate from our stock of locally-sourced Welsh stone, choosing pieces appropriate in thickness, grain and surface quality for the job at hand.

Cutting & Shaping

Using a diamond-tipped saw and grinding tools, we cut each piece to the required shape and dimension. Edges are dressed and smoothed by hand to a clean, consistent finish.

Engraving

Text, motifs and borders are engraved directly into the slate surface. We work from your approved design proof, removing material to the correct depth for clarity and longevity.

Finishing & Despatch

Each piece is cleaned, sealed and carefully packed for delivery. Outdoor pieces receive a weather-resistant treatment. We inspect every item personally before it leaves our workshop.

Why Welsh Slate?

Not all slate is equal. Welsh slate has qualities that make it the craftsperson's first choice for work that is meant to last.

Exceptional Durability

Welsh slate is among the hardest and densest available. Unlike softer imported slates, it resists chipping, cracking and staining over decades of use. A well-made slate piece will still be sharp and legible long after most other materials have deteriorated.

A Living Surface

The natural variation in Welsh slate — the fine laminations, the occasional silver vein, the subtle shift in colour from blue-grey to blue-black — gives each piece its own character. No two slabs look exactly alike, which means no two finished pieces are identical.

Sustainably Sourced

We source from Welsh quarries that have operated responsibly for generations. Slate is a natural, non-synthetic material that requires no chemical treatment and does not deteriorate into micro-plastics. Buying slate is a choice that benefits both craft and environment.

Your vision,
realised in slate

Our bespoke service is for clients who know exactly what they want — or for those who have only the beginning of an idea and need help developing it. Either way, we enjoy the conversation.

We have completed commissions for private homeowners, interior designers, architects, publicans, estates, hotels, churches and local councils. Scale is no obstacle — we have made everything from a small memorial token to a three-metre architectural panel.

  • Architectural Panels — large-format slate for interior and exterior walls, flooring features and structural cladding.
  • Memorial & Commemorative Plaques — designed with care, fitted to churches, public buildings, private grounds and family homes.
  • Business Signage — premium slate signage for pubs, restaurants, hotels and offices that sets a tone from the moment guests arrive.
  • Garden Features — stepping stone paths, border markers, water feature surrounds and freestanding statement pieces.
  • Artistic Pieces — engraved maps, portraits, heraldry, and decorative works for both public and private display.

What Our Customers Say

We ordered wedding favours and table numbers for our wedding in Aberystwyth. The quality was extraordinary — our guests were genuinely impressed. Three years on, several of the slates still sit on our friends' windowsills. Nothing else from the day has lasted so well.

Megan & Thomas Davies Wedding — Aberystwyth, 2021

I commissioned a large house sign and two smaller name plates for our holiday cottage in Ceredigion. The communication was excellent throughout — I saw a proof before anything was engraved, and the finished pieces exceeded what I had imagined. I would not go anywhere else.

Robert Hargreaves House Signs, Ceredigion

I bought a set of six engraved coasters as a retirement gift for my father, who spent his career working on the Cambrian Line. They had small illustrations of the route on each coaster. The detail was remarkable. He says they are the best gift he has ever received.

Caring for Your Slate

Cleaning Wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaning products which can dull the surface and damage engraved areas. Mild washing-up liquid is fine.

Outdoor Pieces Our outdoor-grade sealant protects against rain, frost and UV. Reapply a quality slate oil once a year to maintain appearance and longevity.

Indoor Pieces Coasters and decorative items can be wiped clean and occasionally dressed with a little olive or linseed oil to restore depth of colour.

Painted Fills Engraved lettering filled with paint can be touched up if needed. We supply a small pot of the original fill colour with painted-in orders.

Never Do not use bleach, strong acid or steam cleaning equipment on any slate piece. These can permanently damage the surface and any sealant.
