Where the Teifi
meets the sea

The Gwbert Hotel & Flat Rock Bistro

Perched on the banks of the River Teifi at the very edge of Pembrokeshire National Park, The Gwbert Hotel has welcomed guests since the nineteenth century. Come for the views, stay for the salmon — and for everything else West Wales has to offer.

A hotel shaped by
sea, river and stone

The Gwbert Hotel stands at one of the most beguiling spots in all of Wales: the point where the River Teifi, having wound its way through the Cambrian Mountains, finally surrenders to the sea. It is a place of extraordinary natural drama — of cormorants and seals, of fishing boats and the sound of water on rock.

For well over a century, this has been a place of welcome. Anglers, artists and wanderers have all found their way here, drawn by the scenery and sustained by the hospitality. Today, The Gwbert Hotel continues that tradition with the same warmth and a great deal more comfort.

Our Flat Rock Bistro sits above the water line with panoramic views across to Cardigan Island and the brooding headlands of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. It is the finest dining room in the county, and we make no apology for saying so.

Flat Rock Bistro

The finest table in Ceredigion sits above the water, looking west into the Atlantic. At Flat Rock Bistro we cook with the seasons and the landscape — with produce from local farms, and fish from the river and sea that surround us.

Panoramic estuary dining at its finest

Floor-to-ceiling windows frame 180-degree views across the Teifi estuary to Cardigan Island and the Pembrokeshire headlands beyond. On a clear evening, the light on the water is simply extraordinary — and the food matches it.

Our head chef sources produce within a strict 30-mile radius wherever possible. The result is a menu that feels genuinely rooted in this corner of Wales: sea bass from Cardigan Bay, Welsh Black beef from farms on the Teifi valley, lamb from Preseli, and vegetables from our own kitchen garden.

Renowned for
Salmon & Sewin

The River Teifi is one of the great salmon rivers of Wales. For centuries, fishing families have worked these waters, and the arrival of the first salmon of the season has always been cause for celebration in Cardigan. At The Gwbert Hotel, that tradition is very much alive.

We are privileged to work with local anglers who supply us with the finest wild-caught Atlantic salmon and sewin — the Welsh sea trout, known as the “silver stranger”, which runs the Teifi in summer. Both are served with reverence: simply prepared, to let the quality speak for itself.

When sewin is on the menu, it is worth rearranging your plans. There is nothing quite like it. Ask us for the catch of the day when you arrive.

View the Fish Menu

Atlantic Salmon

Wild Teifi salmon is a different beast entirely from its farmed cousins. Firm-fleshed, deeply coloured and richly flavoured, it commands nothing more than butter, lemon and a good glass of white Burgundy. We serve it pan-fried with samphire and beurre blanc through the season, and occasionally on the smoking rack with trout for a starter.

Sewin — Welsh Sea Trout

Sewin is the jewel of the Teifi: a sea trout that runs upstream in summer, larger and richer than its river-resident relatives. It is considered a delicacy throughout Wales, and rightly so. We take no more than the catch supports, and when it is available, we make it the star of the evening. Ask your server what arrived today.

Seasonal Availability

The salmon season on the Teifi typically runs from March to October, with sewin running through the summer months. Our kitchen diary follows the river — when the fish are running well, so are we. Call ahead for the latest availability, or simply trust us to give you the best of what the river has brought in.

What Our Guests Say

“We have been coming to The Gwbert Hotel for fifteen years and it never disappoints. The sewin we had on our last visit was quite simply the finest fish I have eaten anywhere in Europe. The view from the Flat Rock Bistro at sunset is something we think about all year long.”

Margaret & David H. Herefordshire — Returning guests

“Stayed in the Teifi Suite for our anniversary and it was absolutely perfect. Woke up to seals on the rocks below our window, had a magnificent breakfast, and then spent the evening at dinner watching the light change on the estuary. Could not have asked for more.”

James T. Bristol — Anniversary stay

“Visited for Sunday lunch with the family and it was an absolute treat. The lamb from the Preseli hills was outstanding, the children were made to feel genuinely welcome rather than tolerated, and the sticky toffee pudding prompted a minor family dispute over who would finish the last spoonful.”

The Penfold Family Cardiff — Sunday lunch
