Our Story

A Georgian Landmark
at the Heart of Llandeilo

Standing proudly on The Square since 1765, The Cawdor Hotel has been welcoming travellers, locals, and discerning guests for more than two and a half centuries.

This magnificent Georgian coaching inn has borne witness to the full sweep of Welsh history — from the age of horse-drawn coaches navigating the winding roads of Carmarthenshire, to the bustling market days of Victorian Llandeilo, and through to the present day where it stands as one of West Wales's most celebrated destinations.

Restored with care and sensitivity, The Cawdor retains all the grandeur of its original Georgian architecture whilst offering every modern comfort. The original carved staircase, wide oak floorboards, and tall sash windows speak of another age; the Egyptian cotton linens, locally-sourced larder, and attentive service speak of this one.

in the Making

From coaching inn to boutique hotel, The Cawdor's story is woven into the fabric of Llandeilo and the wider Carmarthenshire community.

Each era has added its own character to this remarkable building, and every generation of owners has held fast to the same principle: genuine hospitality, done properly.

1765

The Coaching Inn Opens

Built in the Georgian style befitting the prosperous market town of Llandeilo, The Cawdor opens its doors as a coaching inn serving travellers on the important route through Carmarthenshire. The building's handsome stone facade and generous yard quickly establish it as the finest hostelry in the Tywi Valley.

1820s

The Golden Age of Coaching

At the height of the coaching era, The Cawdor becomes a key staging post on routes connecting South and West Wales. The stables accommodate dozens of horses; the taproom fills nightly with drovers, merchants, and gentry alike. The hotel's reputation for excellent Welsh fare and comfortable beds spreads across the region.

1895

Victorian Renovation

As the railway transforms Welsh travel, The Cawdor adapts. A major renovation adds the elegant dining room and the first-floor drawing room that still delights guests today. The hotel becomes a favoured retreat for discerning Victorian travellers exploring the natural beauty of West Wales.

1970s

A New Chapter

Sensitive restoration work preserves the hotel's historic character whilst introducing modern comforts. The Georgian bones of the building are celebrated rather than concealed, setting the standard for the sympathetic approach to heritage that defines The Cawdor to this day.

Present Day

A Destination Hotel

Today, The Cawdor is recognised as one of Wales's finest boutique hotels. Its award-winning restaurant champions local producers; its cellar holds some of the finest wines available in the region; and its 19 individually appointed rooms offer a standard of comfort and style that would astonish those first coaching inn guests of 1765.

The Restaurant

Award-Winning
Welsh Cuisine

The Cawdor's restaurant has long been recognised as one of the finest dining destinations in Wales. Our head chef and his team are committed to a simple but demanding principle: the best produce from the best local suppliers, cooked with skill and served with warmth.

The menu changes with the seasons and the land — reflecting the abundance of Carmarthenshire's farms, the freshness of Welsh coastal waters, and the craft of the small producers who share our commitment to quality. Welsh lamb from the hills above Llandeilo, sea bass from Pembrokeshire, Black Mountain cheeses, Tywi Valley honey — each dish tells the story of the place.
