"The Preseli Hills are unlike anywhere else in Wales. Where else can you stand on a Neolithic burial chamber, watch a peregrine hunt across the moorland, and see the sea glittering ten miles to the south — all before lunch?"

— Rhodri, Lead Guide & Founder

Born from a Deep Love of These Hills

Preseli Hills Walking Holidays was founded in 2006 by Rhodri Morgan, a Pembrokeshire native who spent his childhood learning every footpath, ridge and hidden valley across the Preseli range. What began as informal walks for friends and family grew into one of Wales's most trusted guided walking services.

We specialise in the Preseli Hills and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path — two landscapes so different in character that a single walking holiday can encompass both the wild, windswept moorland of the uplands and the dramatic sea cliffs and sheltered coves of the coast.

Every walk is led by qualified, local guides who bring the landscape to life: its geology, its wildlife, its extraordinary prehistoric heritage, and the stories of the communities who have lived and worked here for thousands of years.

The Hills
Ancient moorland rising to 536m at Foel Cwmcerwyn — the highest point in Pembrokeshire
The Coast
220 miles of National Park coastline, from the Daugleddau estuary to Cardigan Bay
The Heritage
Neolithic cromlechs, Iron Age hillforts, and the legendary bluestone quarries of Stonehenge
The Wildlife
Red kites, peregrines, choughs, otters, grey seals and rare upland plants
Spring
March — May

The hills come alive with wheatears, skylarks and early purple orchids. Long, clear days and the possibility of snow on the higher ridges — extraordinary light for photography.

Summer
June — August

Heather begins to purple across the moorland. Grey seal pups on the offshore islands, coast path at its finest. Our busiest season — book well in advance.

Autumn
September — November

Peak heather bloom on the Preselis. Red kites at their most visible. Fewer walkers on the paths, dramatic skies, and the best conditions for spotting migratory birds.

Winter
December — February

A hidden gem for experienced walkers. Frost on the standing stones, snowfields across Mynydd Preseli, wading birds on the estuaries. Raw, elemental and unforgettable.

Wildlife & Heritage of the Preseli Hills

The Preseli Hills and Pembrokeshire Coast are among the most biodiverse and historically rich landscapes in Britain. Our guides will help you see and understand what most visitors miss entirely.

Wildlife

Red Kite
Once on the brink of extinction in Britain, red kites are now a thrilling daily sight over the Preseli moorland. Their distinctive forked tails and russet plumage make them unmistakable in flight.
Chough
The red-billed chough — Wales's emblematic crow — nests in the sea cliffs of Pembrokeshire. Their acrobatic display flights over the coastal path are a genuine highlight of any walk.
Grey Seal
Pembrokeshire holds one of the largest grey seal colonies in Wales. In autumn, pups are born in the hidden coves along the coast path — a spectacular and moving sight.
Peregrine Falcon
The world's fastest bird hunts the moorland and sea cliffs alike. Our guides know the nest sites and the best vantage points for watching a hunting peregrine in full stoop.
Merlin & Hen Harrier
The open moorland of the Preselis is one of the last strongholds of the merlin — Britain's smallest falcon — and a hunting ground for the ghostly, quartering hen harrier in winter months.
Harbour Porpoise
The sheltered waters of Pembrokeshire are among the best in Britain for spotting harbour porpoise. Seen year-round from the sea cliffs, particularly around St Davids Head and Strumble.

Heritage

A Landscape Written in Stone

Nowhere in Wales — perhaps nowhere in Britain — holds as many layers of human history as the Preseli Hills. This is the land that built Stonehenge, that sheltered the last stand of the Iron Age, and that sent its saints walking to Rome and Jerusalem.

Carn Menyn — The Stonehenge Quarries The spotted dolerite bluestones of Stonehenge were quarried from these very outcrops on Mynydd Preseli, and transported 150 miles to Salisbury Plain around 3000 BC — one of the most remarkable feats of prehistoric engineering ever recorded.
Pentre Ifan Cromlech The finest Neolithic burial chamber in Wales. Four great uprights support a massive 16-tonne capstone, built around 3500 BC. Standing here at dawn with the hills behind and the sea ahead is a genuinely otherworldly experience.
Carn Ingli — The Angel's Fort This rocky summit above Newport was both an Iron Age hillfort and, according to tradition, where the sixth-century saint Brynach came to commune with angels. The fort's ramparts survive in extraordinary condition.
The Golden Road Ridgeway The high ridge of the Preselis has been a major route for at least 5,000 years. Neolithic traders, Bronze Age chieftains, Iron Age warriors and Celtic saints all walked this ancient track that we follow today.
St Davids Cathedral Hidden in a valley to protect it from Viking raiders, the medieval cathedral of Wales's patron saint has been a place of pilgrimage for 1,400 years. Two pilgrimages to St Davids were declared equal to one to Rome.

Stories from the Hills

"Rhodri's knowledge of the Preseli Hills is extraordinary. He pointed out a merlin hunting less than thirty metres away that I would never have noticed on my own. The luggage transfer worked flawlessly and our B&Bs were all exceptional. We'll be back for the coast path next year."

Margaret & David Collins
Preseli Hills Explorer, September

"We booked a private group walk for twelve people from our walking club. Gethin was superb — his talk at Carn Menyn about the Stonehenge connection left everyone speechless. The organisation was impeccable from first enquiry to final drop-off. Cannot recommend highly enough."

Alan Hartfield, Club Secretary
Wiltshire Ramblers Group Visit, May

"The Hills to Sea holiday was the best week of walking I've ever done. Sian spotted grey seals with their pups in a cove most people walk straight past. Every single B&B was warm, welcoming and had excellent breakfasts. Worth every penny."

Frances O'Donnell
Hills to Sea: A Pembrokeshire Classic, October

"We organised a company team day in the Preseli Hills. Twenty-two colleagues, mixed fitness levels, perfect weather. Rhodri split us into two groups and both had completely different but equally magical days. Several people said it was the best team day they'd ever attended."

Hannah Griffiths, HR Director
Corporate Group Day Walk, June

"My husband and I walked the full north section of the Coast Path over seven days. The daily guides were all exceptional, the B&Bs were perfectly located, and the celebratory dinner on the last evening was a real touch. An unforgettable holiday."

Patricia & James Rowland
Coast Path North Section, July

"I came as a solo walker a little nervous about joining a group. Within an hour on Foel Cwmcerwyn I was completely at ease. Rhodri paces things beautifully, keeps everyone together, and the views from the top on that clear October day were simply indescribable."

Tom Brenigan
Foel Cwmcerwyn Day Walk, October

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous hill walking experience?

Not for our easier and moderate walks. We offer routes graded for all levels, from gentle valley and coastal walks to challenging upland traverses. We will ask about your experience when you enquire so we can match you to the right walk.

Can I join as a solo walker?

Absolutely. Many of our walkers come on their own and join small guided groups. We keep group sizes to a maximum of twelve, so the atmosphere is always friendly and personal rather than impersonal. Solo walkers are very welcome.

What is the maximum group size?

For scheduled walks, our maximum is twelve walkers per guide. For private group bookings, we can accommodate up to 24 walkers by providing multiple guides — ensuring everyone receives personal attention regardless of group size.

How far in advance should I book?

For multi-day holidays in peak season (June to September), we recommend booking at least three months in advance. Day walks can often be booked with shorter notice, but popular dates fill quickly. For Christmas and New Year walks, book from September onwards.

Are dogs welcome on guided walks?

Well-behaved dogs are welcome on most of our walks, but please let us know when you book. Dogs must be kept on a lead across the moorland, particularly during the upland bird breeding season (April to July), and must be comfortable around other people.

What happens if the weather is very bad?

We walk in most weather conditions — rain and wind are part of the Welsh walking experience. However, if conditions become unsafe (high winds on exposed ridges, lightning, severe storm warnings), we will modify the route or, in extreme cases, postpone the walk and offer full rescheduling.

Do you cater for dietary requirements?

Yes. We ask about dietary requirements when you book and pass this information to our B&B partners and packed lunch providers. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other requirements are all accommodated with advance notice.

Can you arrange transfers from the railway station?

Yes. We work with local taxi and minibus companies and can arrange collection from Fishguard, Haverfordwest or Whitland stations. Please include this request when you enquire and we will include it in your quote.
