Bryn Coed is a family-run nursery and garden centre set in the heart of Pembrokeshire. We grow the majority of our plants right here on site, so everything you take home has been nurtured in the same Welsh air and soil as your own garden.
Bryn Coed Nursery began as a small family plot in 1989. Three generations on, it has grown into one of west Wales’s most-loved garden destinations — but the values have never changed.
Nestled in the rolling countryside near Narberth, our five-acre site includes working propagation glasshouses, growing fields, a well-stocked garden centre, seasonal display gardens and a welcoming tea room. We grow the vast majority of what we sell ourselves, which means our plants arrive in your garden already acclimatised to Pembrokeshire weather.
Our team of six horticulturalists have between them over a century of growing experience. Whether you are starting your very first raised bed or redesigning an established country garden, we offer the kind of straightforward, honest advice you can only get from people who actually grow things for a living.
From specimen trees for a grand border to a single pot of thyme for the kitchen windowsill, our range is grown with Welsh weather in mind.
Hardy, structure-giving shrubs chosen for their tolerance of Atlantic conditions. Camellias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, hebes, escallonias, pieris and much more — all container-grown on our own nursery.
Native species and ornamental trees for every scale of garden. Rowans, birch, acer, cherry, crab apple, hazel, holly, yew and a fine selection of fruit trees suited to the mild Pembrokeshire climate.
A generous selection of border perennials propagated right here at Bryn Coed. Geraniums, heucheras, salvias, astrantia, echinacea, penstemon, rudbeckia, agapanthus and many cottage-garden favourites.
Seasonal bedding grown in our own glasshouses from late winter through summer. Petunias, lobelia, fuchsias, begonias, antirrhinums, marigolds, impatiens, verbena and a wide range of patio basket plants.
Culinary and medicinal herbs as well as a strong range of vegetable plugs and young plants from March onwards. Tomatoes, courgettes, squash, chard, kale, leeks and salad leaves ready for growing on.
Climbing roses, clematis, wisteria, honeysuckle, jasmine, hydrangea petiolaris and Virginia creeper for walls, fences and pergolas. Bare-root roses available each winter at excellent value.
Every plant in our nursery has been started, grown and hardened off in Pembrokeshire. That matters far more than it might first appear.
Grown outdoors in our exposed Pembrokeshire fields, our plants are already accustomed to coastal winds, high rainfall and temperature swings before they reach you. No shock of adaptation required.
Plants travel from our growing fields to our sales benches, not from a Dutch or Spanish nursery via a distribution warehouse. Less transit stress means stronger root systems and healthier foliage.
Our team can tell you exactly how each variety was raised, which growing medium it prefers and how it has performed in local gardens. That kind of provenance knowledge simply cannot be offered by a supermarket trolley bay.
We transitioned to peat-free compost-based growing media across our nursery in 2021. All plants propagated here are grown without peat, supporting wetland conservation across Wales and the wider UK.
Beyond our living plants, our garden centre carries a carefully curated range of growing supplies, tools, containers and accessories. We stock what works rather than what fills a shelf — and our team can advise on any of it.
Peat-free multipurpose, ericaceous, John Innes formulations, bark mulch, grit, leaf mould and specialist cactus and orchid mixes. We stock RHS-endorsed and independently trialled brands.
Terracotta pots hand-thrown in Portugal, lightweight fibreclay planters, glazed statement bowls, raised bed kits, window boxes and bespoke troughs. Sizes from a six-inch windowsill pot to a half-barrel planter.
Stainless steel hand tools by Burgon & Ball, Sneeboer and DeWit. Spades, forks, hoes, trowels, cultivators, dibbers, pruning saws and a wide selection of Felco secateurs and spare parts.
Heritage and modern vegetable, herb and flower seeds from Kings Seeds, Real Seeds and Suttons. Seasonal bulb displays from late summer. Native wildflower seed mixes for meadow creation.
Hoses, hose reels, connectors, watering cans, spray lances, seep hoses and simple drip-irrigation starter kits. Water butts and connectors in various sizes. All brass fittings stocked.
Liquid and granular feeds, specialist rose and rhododendron feeds, tomato food, seaweed extracts, mycorrhizal fungi, slow-release tablets and organic pelleted chicken manure.
A practical range of gloves from lightweight cotton to heavy-duty thorn-proof gauntlets. Gardening aprons, kneelers, knee pads, clogs and waterproof footwear for year-round use.
Plant labels, bamboo and metal canes, jute twine, copper slug deterrents, bird feeders, nesting boxes, hedgehog houses and a small selection of garden gifts and locally made pottery.
We supply compost, bedding plants and container-grown shrubs to local landscapers, hotels, holiday parks and commercial properties throughout Pembrokeshire. Trade accounts are available for qualifying customers. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Our team does not work from a script. Every member of staff at Bryn Coed is an experienced gardener with a genuine passion for horticulture — and the best way to pass it on.
We understand that Pembrokeshire gardens face particular challenges: salt-laden winds from the Irish Sea, heavy clay or thin stony soils, high rainfall combined with summer drought, and the particular microclimate that comes with a coastal location. Our advice is tailored to what actually works here, not what looks good in a glossy magazine photographed in Surrey.
Drop in any time with a question, a photograph or a mystery plant sample. We do not charge for advice, and we will never push a product on you that you do not need. If you want a more in-depth consultation for a garden design project, we can arrange a one-to-one session with one of our senior horticulturalists at the nursery.
Pembrokeshire soils range from deep, fertile loam to thin, acid upland peat and waterlogged clay. We can advise on improvement, raised bed design and appropriate plant selection for your plot.
Gardening near the coast requires specific plant choices and windbreak strategies. We stock and advise on salt-tolerant species and native hedging that thrive in exposed positions.
Pembrokeshire has outstanding natural heritage. We advise on pollinator planting, wildlife pond creation, hedgerow management and making your garden a sanctuary for birds and insects.
From vine weevil in pots to box blight in parterres, we can help identify problems and suggest organic and conventional solutions. Bring a sample or a photograph any time.
Starting from scratch or inheriting a neglected plot? We offer informal design consultations to help you develop a planting plan suited to your soil, aspect and lifestyle.
Learn to propagate your own plants from cuttings, seed or division. We run practical workshops and can advise on the equipment you need to get started at home.
Our nursery and gardens change with the seasons. Here is a guide to what you can expect to find at each time of year.
The Potting Shed Tea Room sits at the heart of Bryn Coed, overlooking the display gardens. It is exactly what a garden centre tea room ought to be: warm, unpretentious and full of things that have been properly made rather than unwrapped from a chiller cabinet.
Our cakes are baked fresh each morning in our on-site kitchen. Soups are made with seasonal vegetables, many of which come from our own growing beds. The coffee is freshly ground from a Welsh-roasted single origin, and the tea is loose-leaf from a Pembrokeshire tea merchant. We try not to overcomplicate things.
Dogs are welcome in the tea room as long as they are on a lead and behave themselves better than some of our human customers. We have a water bowl outside and a small selection of dog biscuits at the till.
Pushchairs are easily accommodated and there is a baby-changing facility in the adjacent accessible toilet block. We can also arrange group bookings for garden clubs, WI meetings or other societies — please ring ahead to discuss.
Well-behaved dogs welcome inside and throughout the nursery.
Produce sourced from Pembrokeshire farms and Welsh suppliers where possible.
Parties of 10 or more are welcome with advance notice. Ring us to book.
Covered terrace overlooking the display gardens, open from spring to autumn.
Tea room opens with the nursery and closes one hour before the nursery. Last food orders 30 minutes before closing.
Our practical workshops are run by the Bryn Coed team and kept deliberately small so every participant gets personal attention. No PowerPoint slides. No glossy handouts. Just real gardening, hands in the soil.
A practical two-hour morning session covering seed selection, compost choice, sowing techniques and aftercare. Participants take home their own seed trays and a packet of mixed annual seeds.
Understanding which plants thrive in seaside and Atlantic-exposed gardens. We will tour the nursery, discuss windbreak strategy and help each participant build a plant list for their own situation.
Create your own summer hanging basket to take home. Compost, liner, basket frame and a generous selection of plants all included in the price. Suitable for complete beginners.
Learn softwood and semi-ripe cutting technique in our propagation glasshouse. Participants take home cuttings and a rooting hormone powder kit to continue at home.
An informal guided walk through our demonstration wildlife garden and growing fields, discussing pond creation, native hedging, meadow establishment and pollinator planting in detail.
Discover which bulbs to plant in autumn for a spectacular spring display. Covers planting depths, spacing, layering techniques and choosing varieties suited to Welsh conditions.
To book any workshop, ring us on 01834 500 420 or send an email. Full payment is required to secure a place.
Book a Workshop“I moved to Pembrokeshire three years ago and had no idea how different coastal gardening would be. The team at Bryn Coed spent an hour with me on my first visit, working out what would and would not cope with my exposed plot. Everything they suggested has thrived.”
“The hanging basket workshop was an absolute joy. Small group, real plants, proper instruction and then we all sat in the tea room with a scone at the end. Exactly what a Saturday morning should be. I will be back for the autumn bulb session.”
“We visit every few weeks throughout the year. The plant quality is consistently excellent and the prices are fair. But honestly what keeps us coming back is the advice. You cannot get that kind of knowledge from a supermarket garden aisle.”
After thirty-five years, certain questions come up time and again. Here are our answers.
If your question is not here, please ring us on 01834 500 420 or drop in. We genuinely enjoy talking about plants.
Autumn and early spring are ideal for most trees and shrubs in Pembrokeshire. Cooler temperatures and higher rainfall mean less stress on newly planted roots. Container-grown plants can technically be planted any time of year, but avoid the height of summer unless you can water consistently.
We do not carry out garden planting or landscaping ourselves, but we are happy to recommend trusted local contractors and landscape gardeners who know the area well. We also offer informal design consultations at the nursery to help you plan a planting scheme.
Yes. Particularly for large orders, seasonal bedding or specific varieties, it is worth ringing ahead. We do not currently operate an online shop, but we can reserve stock and take a deposit by phone. We plan to launch online ordering in due course.
Yes, bare-root roses, hedging plants and selected trees are available from November through to late February. Bare-root stock is excellent value and establishes well when planted in its dormant season. Contact us in October to discuss what we will have available.
We have a large free car park with dedicated accessible spaces close to the entrance. There is plenty of room for cars, vans and trailers. If you are collecting a large order with a lorry, please ring ahead so we can arrange suitable access.
The garden centre building, tea room and most of the nursery sales area are fully accessible. Some of the growing fields and glasshouse areas have uneven surfaces. Please ask a member of staff who will be happy to assist or fetch plants from any area on your behalf.
Yes. We accept all major debit and credit cards, contactless payment and cash. There is no minimum spend for card transactions. We do not currently accept American Express.
Dogs on leads are very welcome throughout the nursery and in the tea room. Please clean up after your dog. We have a water bowl at the tea room entrance and dog biscuits at the till for good behaviour, which we define as not eating the stock.
We are located just outside Narberth in the heart of Pembrokeshire, easily accessible from the A40 and well signposted from the town centre.
