Our Story / Penrallt / Est. c.1998

Rooted in Pembrokeshire Soil

Penrallt Garden Centre sits on the north Pembrokeshire coast, just outside the village of Moylegrove and a stone's throw from the Cardigan Bay coastline. For over twenty-five years, this family-run nursery has been growing plants suited to the unique conditions of West Wales — the salt-laden winds, the heavy rainfall, the clay-rich earth that challenges gardeners and rewards those who know how to work with it.

What began as a small nursery selling surplus stock from the family's own garden gradually expanded into one of the region's most trusted sources for quality plants. Every shrub, perennial, and tree has been selected or propagated for its ability to flourish in this corner of Wales. You will not find mass-produced Dutch imports that wilt after their first Pembrokeshire storm.

The team at Penrallt are gardeners first, retailers second. They know the soil, they know the climate, and they know which clematis will scramble up your south-facing wall and which fern will carpet the shaded woodland floor at the bottom of your cwm. That local knowledge is what sets Penrallt apart from any chain garden centre.

Coastal Planting Guide

A
Wind-Tolerant Shrubs
+

Living on the Pembrokeshire coast means your garden takes a battering from Atlantic winds. The key is choosing shrubs that flex rather than snap, with small or leathery leaves that resist desiccation. Escallonia, hebe, olearia, and griselinia all perform brilliantly here. Plant them as a first line of defence before filling in behind with more delicate specimens.

Top Picks for Penrallt's Climate

  • Escallonia 'Apple Blossom' — pink flowers, evergreen
  • Griselinia littoralis — lush green, dense hedge
  • Olearia macrodonta — daisy bush, silvery leaves
  • Hebe 'Great Orme' — pink spikes, compact
  • Fuchsia magellanica — wild hedging, hardy
B
Salt-Tolerant Perennials
+

Salt spray can travel surprisingly far inland, especially during winter storms. Choosing perennials with natural salt tolerance ensures your borders stay full and vibrant even in exposed positions. Many coastal wildflowers — thrift, sea campion, and red valerian — are perfect choices and support local pollinators too.

Recommended Varieties

  • Armeria maritima — thrift, native pink cushions
  • Centranthus ruber — red valerian, self-seeds
  • Eryngium maritimum — sea holly, architectural
  • Crambe maritima — sea kale, edible leaves
  • Limonium latifolium — sea lavender, airy sprays
C
Shade Gardening in Welsh Valleys
+

The deep cwms and wooded valleys around Moylegrove and the Teifi gorge create pockets of heavy shade that challenge even experienced gardeners. Embrace the conditions rather than fighting them. Ferns, hostas, astilbe, and woodland bulbs create a lush, green tapestry that thrives without direct sun.

Shade Champions

  • Dryopteris filix-mas — male fern, tough native
  • Hosta 'Halcyon' — blue-green, slug resistant
  • Astilbe chinensis — feathery plumes, damp shade
  • Digitalis purpurea — foxglove, biennial native
  • Anemone nemorosa — wood anemone, spring carpet
D
Native Hedging for Wildlife
+

A mixed native hedge is the single best thing you can do for wildlife in your garden. It provides food, shelter, and nesting sites for birds, insects, and small mammals. We supply bare-root whips from November through March — the ideal planting window. A mix of five or more species creates the most ecologically valuable boundary.

Native Hedge Mix

  • Crataegus monogyna — hawthorn, backbone species
  • Prunus spinosa — blackthorn, sloe berries
  • Corylus avellana — hazel, catkins and nuts
  • Rosa canina — dog rose, hips for birds
  • Ilex aquifolium — holly, evergreen element
E
Growing Vegetables on the Coast
+

The Pembrokeshire coast has a milder microclimate than much of inland Wales, making it surprisingly good for vegetable growing. Early potatoes thrive in the light soils near the sea, and the long growing season means you can extend cropping well into autumn. The key is wind protection — even a low windbreak fence can double your yield.

Coastal Veg Tips

  • Start early potatoes by February in sheltered spots
  • Use fleece tunnels for wind protection on exposed plots
  • Seaweed mulch adds minerals and deters slugs
  • Brassicas thrive in the mild, wet conditions
  • Raised beds warm faster and drain the heavy clay

What Gardeners Say

"Wonderful selection of plants that actually survive our coastal garden. The advice alone is worth the trip. We drive from Fishguard every spring to stock up."
Margaret T. / Fishguard
* * * * *
"Everything I have bought from Penrallt over the past ten years is still growing strong. That says more than any review can. Proper plants, proper knowledge."
Huw D. / Cardigan

"Best garden centre in North Pembrokeshire by a mile. Family-run, friendly, and they genuinely know what they are talking about. My garden has never looked better."
Sarah L. / Newport

Twenty-Five Years on the Pembrokeshire Coast

Penrallt Garden Centre has weathered the same storms as the plants it grows. Through foot-and-mouth, through recessions, through a global pandemic — the nursery has stayed open, stayed independent, and stayed true to its founding principle: grow quality plants that belong in Welsh gardens.

The name Penrallt comes from the Welsh for "top of the hill," and that is exactly where you will find us — perched above the Moylegrove valley with views stretching out towards the Irish Sea. It is not the easiest place to run a garden centre, but it is one of the most beautiful. And the altitude and exposure mean that if a plant survives here, it will survive anywhere in Pembrokeshire.

Every member of the team lives locally. They garden the same soil, endure the same rain, and celebrate the same brief, glorious Pembrokeshire summers. When they recommend a plant, they know it works — because it is growing in their own garden too.
