Mountain Warehouse Cardigan sits in the market town of Cardigan — a perfect base for exploring some of the finest outdoor terrain in the British Isles. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park lies minutes away, the Cambrian Mountains rise to the east, and the Ceredigion Coast Path stretches north and south.
Our store stocks the full Mountain Warehouse range: waterproof jackets, hiking boots, backpacks, camping equipment, ski and snowboard clothing, trail running shoes, and a comprehensive selection of family outdoor wear. We carry products from base layer to outerwear, for conditions from a breezy coastal walk to a winter ridge in full storm.
Understanding the technology in your gear helps you choose the right product for the conditions you will face.
Measured in millimetres (mm), the hydrostatic head rating tells you how much water pressure a fabric can resist. For light showers, 1,500mm is adequate. For Welsh hill walking, look for 5,000mm or above. Our top waterproofs offer 10,000mm+ for serious mountain use. All fully taped seams prevent water ingress at every stitch line — not just the fabric itself.
WaterproofingBreathability is rated in grams per square metre per 24 hours (g/m²/24h). The higher the number, the more moisture vapour can escape. Active hikers generate considerable heat and sweat; a jacket rated 5,000g is the minimum for sustained effort. Our technical waterproofs reach 20,000g for high-output activities such as trail running or ski touring.
BreathabilityBase layer wicks moisture from skin. Mid layer retains warmth (fleece or insulation). Outer layer blocks wind and rain. Each layer works independently and together. Getting the system right means you stay comfortable across a wide temperature range by adding or removing layers as conditions change. We can help you build a complete layering system in store.
Layering SystemA walking boot's support comes from its last (the internal mould), the shank (stiffness underfoot), and the ankle collar height. Trail shoes suit well-maintained paths; mid-cut boots offer ankle support for undulating terrain; full high-cut leather boots are designed for technical mountain routes. Our staff will assess your foot width, arch type, and intended terrain to find the right fit — never buy boots you haven't tried walking in.
FootwearEN/ISO 23537 standardises sleeping bag ratings with three figures: upper comfort limit, comfort rating, and lower limit. For UK summer camping, a 3-season bag rated to +5°C comfort is usually sufficient. For winter camping or high-altitude trips, choose a bag rated to -10°C or colder. Fill power matters too: higher-loft down traps more air per gram, giving warmth without weight.
CampingThe right pack is one that fits your torso length, not your height. An incorrectly fitted rucksack places strain on your lower back and shoulders regardless of its weight. Day hikes typically require 20–30 litres; overnight trips need 40–55L; multi-day expeditions demand 60L+. We measure your torso in store and adjust the harness system to transfer weight efficiently onto your hips, where it belongs.

"Bought walking boots here for a Pembrokeshire Coast Path trip. The staff spent a good twenty minutes with me getting the right fit and insole. Covered 186 miles without a blister. Remarkable."
"Kitted out three children for a camping trip under £200 total. Waterproof jackets, wellies, fleeces, sleeping bags — the lot. Everything still going strong two summers later."
"We pop in before every ski trip. Always find what we need at prices well below the resort shops. The ski jacket I bought three years ago is still faultless — used it every season."
"Trail running shoes for the Cambrian Way. The Mudraker gripped exceptionally well on the wet grassland sections above Tregaron. Genuinely impressed for the price point."
"Click and Collect is brilliantly convenient. Ordered a 65L pack online, collected in-store the next day. Staff checked the fit before I left — that kind of service is rare."
"Used the returns process after a boot caused heel rub. Straightforward, no argument, quick exchange for a wider fitting. Exactly how a returns policy should work."

Mountain WalkingAncient landscape of moorland, bronze age monuments, and the quarry source of Stonehenge's bluestones. Boggy in winter; lightweight waterproof trousers and gaiters make a significant difference.
Hill WalkingGrey seals, bottlenose dolphins, porpoises, and red kites all within reach of Cardigan town. The local Wildlife Trust manages several accessible reserves. Binoculars and weatherproofs essential.

Waterproof jackets rely on a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating that degrades with washing, dirt, and compression. Wash with a technical cleaner (not standard detergent), then tumble dry on low heat or iron on a low setting to reactivate the DWR. Nikwax TX.Direct spray or wash-in treatments restore DWR performance. We sell these in store.
Cardigan town centre has several public car parks within a short walk of our store. The main town car park off Quay Street and the Finch Square car park are both convenient. Disabled parking bays are available near the town centre. Our store itself is on one level with step-free access.

Our Cardigan team share the items they personally rely on for hiking and camping across Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion.
"I have walked the full Pembrokeshire Coast Path in this jacket twice. The 5,000mm rating is more than enough for the exposed headland sections. Packable into its own pocket, so it weighs nothing in your bag on the clear days. At under £40 in the sale, it is the best-value waterproof we stock."
"I fit walking boots for customers every day, and the Explorer Mid is the one I point most people towards. Mid-cut ankle support is right for the terrain around here — enough stability for the Preseli Hills without the weight of a full-height mountaineering boot. The waterproof membrane holds up properly in the boggy sections above St. Davids."
"We take this tent to Pembrokeshire three or four times a year with the family. The front porch is large enough to store wet gear and muddy boots outside the inner. It pitches in under fifteen minutes, and the steel pegs hold on the coastal sites where the wind comes in off the sea."
"I run the trails above Aberteifi regularly. The Mudraker's lug pattern channels mud away from the sole and keeps traction on loose shale sections. They dry quickly too, which matters when you are running near the estuary. For the money, they outperform trail shoes costing twice as much."
"Parents always ask what jacket will last the whole school year and still perform on a camping trip. This one. Fully taped seams, machine washable, reflective trim, and available in sizes from 3–4 up to 11–12 years. I have seen children in these at the beach, on hills, and at school pick-up. They take a real battering."
"Before every ski trip I kit customers up in Merino base layers. The natural fibre regulates temperature better than synthetic on the lift queues when you are standing still, and it doesn't hold odour through a long ski day. It is also perfectly usable as an everyday winter underlayer back home in Wales."
Not all waterproofs are equal. Use this quick guide to match the specification to your activity level and the conditions you expect to face in Wales.
Suitable for light showers and short walks in mild conditions. Not recommended for sustained rainfall or exposed Welsh coastlines.
The standard for regular hill walking. Handles typical Welsh weather: sustained rain, wind-driven showers, and coastal spray. Good for Pembrokeshire Coast Path conditions.
For serious mountain use, ski resorts, or prolonged exposure in storm conditions. Paired with high breathability ratings (10,000g+) for high-output activities. Our recommended specification for Cambrian Mountain routes and ski trips.
Sits against skin. Wicks moisture away. Choose Merino for warmth and odour resistance; synthetic for high-output activity where fast drying is essential.
Insulates and retains body heat. Fleece for breathability and quick-dry performance. Insulated jackets (down or synthetic) for static activities or extreme cold.
Blocks wind, rain, and snow. Should be breathable to allow moisture from layers beneath to escape. Match waterproof rating to your planned activity intensity and exposure.
West Wales tip: Always carry all three layers, even on clear summer days. Conditions on exposed coastal headlands and moorland ridges change faster than any forecast predicts.
