Newport, Pembrokeshire
Restaurant with Rooms
An award-winning Georgian townhouse at the heart of Newport. Tasting menus built on our kitchen garden, the sea beyond our door, and the finest seasonal produce Wales can offer.
Established in Newport
Llys Meddyg — Welsh for Doctor's Court — occupies an elegant Georgian townhouse on the high street of Newport, a small market town nestled between the Preseli Hills and the Pembrokeshire Coast. We are a restaurant with rooms: a place where exceptional food and genuine hospitality share equal billing.
Our kitchen draws first from the walled garden behind the house, then from a landscape of extraordinary richness: lobsters landed at nearby Fishguard, salt-marsh lamb from the estuary meadows, raw honey from hives kept on the hillside, and mushrooms foraged in the ancient woodland that cloaks the Nevern valley.
AA 2 Rosettes
Our menus change with the weeks rather than the seasons — guided by what the garden and the surrounding landscape are offering at their peak. Every dish is built from the ground up, telling the story of a particular place at a particular moment.
Our Philosophy
We do not cook to any trend. We cook to the landscape we inhabit. The Pembrokeshire coast is spectacularly rich — a collision of Atlantic swell, ancient farmland, and Celtic heritage that produces ingredients unlike anywhere else in Britain.
The Walled Garden
Our walled kitchen garden, running along the back of the house, supplies the restaurant with vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, and soft fruit throughout the year. It is not decorative — it is the engine room of our menu.
Rare and heritage varieties chosen for flavour, not uniformity. Grown without compromise in beds enriched with our own compost.
Over sixty varieties of culinary and medicinal herbs, picked fresh for each service and used to season, garnish, and infuse throughout the menu.
Borage, nasturtium, viola, calendula and dozens more — grown as much for their flavour as their beauty. Every petal on the plate is edible and intentional.
Gooseberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, loganberries and strawberries. Summer's abundance preserved in ferments, vinegars and jams for use all year.
Seasonal Harvest
The garden calendar governs our menu. A Pembrokeshire spring arrives slowly but generously. Summer is extravagant. Autumn rewards patience. And even in winter, the cloche beds and root store keep the kitchen supplied.

Garden Tours
Join us for a guided tour of the kitchen garden, led by our head chef or head gardener. Learn how we plan the growing year, how surplus is preserved, and which plants are shaping the current menu. Tours conclude with a tasting in the restaurant.
Five Luxury Rooms
Each room is individually designed — a study in restraint and quality. Natural linens, handmade Welsh blankets, original art and deep baths: the ingredients of a proper retreat after a long evening at the table.
Our Finest Room
Our largest and most private room, overlooking the walled kitchen garden. A freestanding copper bath sits beside floor-to-ceiling sash windows. White-washed stone walls, hand-embroidered textiles from a local weaver, and a writing desk where more than one guest has decided to extend their stay.
Double
Facing the Preseli Hills, this calm double room is decorated in sage and stone tones with a roll-top bath and hand-painted botanical prints.
Double
Looking out over the rooftops of the town, this characterful room features an original Georgian fireplace, canopied bed and deep roll-top bath.
Superior Double
Named for the ancient river below the town, this superior room has a private terrace, antique Irish linen and a generous walk-in rain shower.
Double
Our most recently refurbished room, furnished in the natural palette of sand and sea glass. Features a double-ended soaking tub and slate bathroom.
The Full Stay
"Stay two nights and you will begin to understand Newport. Stay three and you will find it difficult to leave."
All rooms include a full breakfast cooked to order, using garden produce and eggs from a neighbour's hens. We are happy to arrange hiking routes, kayaking on the estuary, and guided coastal walks.

Special Evenings
Beyond our regular service, we host a programme of wine dinners, collaboration evenings with visiting chefs, and seasonal garden events throughout the year.
Our wine dinner series brings small-production winemakers to Newport for intimate evenings around a long table. Each dinner is built around a single producer or region, with our kitchen designing courses to match each wine rather than the other way around.
A guided walk through the walled kitchen garden with our head chef or head gardener, followed by a tasting of dishes made from what was harvested that morning. Ideal for groups with an interest in food, growing, or provenance.
An evening with Domaine Rossignol-Trapet — six courses, six Burgundies, one very long table.
Our head chef cooks alongside a guest from a prominent London kitchen for one special evening only.
The first garden tour of the year — asparagus is coming and the garden is at its most hopeful.
An exploration of low-intervention wines from Wales, England and Brittany with matched small plates.
The Cellar
Our wine list is built around the same principles as our menu: provenance, personality, and a refusal to default to the obvious. You will find growers you know alongside discoveries from regions you may not.
We favour small producers working their own land, with minimal intervention in the cellar. We carry a strong selection of Welsh and English wines, alongside our well-loved Burgundy and Loire sections. Our sommelier is always pleased to guide.
Exclusive Use
The Private Dining Room seats up to twelve guests in complete privacy. Whether it is a significant birthday, a business dinner, a wedding rehearsal, or simply a gathering of people who deserve a remarkable meal, we build the evening around you.
We will work with you on a bespoke menu, a wine selection, flowers from the garden, and any details that will make the evening feel singular. The room is yours for the night.
What Guests Say
The tasting menu was the finest meal I have eaten in Wales — perhaps in Britain. Every course told a story of the land and sea around Newport, and the sommelier's pairings were inspired. We are already planning a return.
We chose Llys Meddyg for our tenth anniversary and it exceeded every expectation. The Garden Suite is exceptional — waking up to the walled garden on a clear October morning is a memory I shall keep for a very long time.
The kitchen garden tour was transformative. Understanding where the food comes from — seeing the head chef explain which plants will be on the menu that evening — changed how I think about what we eat. Genuinely unmissable.
