Where West Wales
meets the lens

Professional photography rooted in Borth and the Ceredigion coast — capturing the raw beauty of this landscape and the lives woven through it.

Janet Baxter photographing the Ceredigion coastline at golden hour

Rooted in this corner of Wales

I am a professional photographer based in Borth, a small village on the Ceredigion coast between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth. I have lived and worked here for nearly two decades, and the landscape — its light, its moods, its wildlife — remains an endless source of fascination.

My practice spans landscape and seascape photography along the Ceredigion and Cardigan Bay coastlines, wildlife work in the Dyfi estuary and surrounding uplands, portrait sessions from my studio and on location, and documentary coverage of weddings, community events and corporate occasions throughout mid and west Wales.

I work with both digital and medium format film systems, depending on the brief, and I print all fine-art editions in-house using archival pigment inks on heavyweight cotton and baryta papers. Every print that leaves my studio is one I am proud to put my name to.

"Good photography is not about equipment or technique. It is about patience, attention, and a genuine curiosity about the world."

Four specialisms, one approach

Every brief is different, but the underlying commitment — care, patience, and genuine craft — is always the same.

Landscape & Seascape

The Ceredigion coast, the Dyfi estuary, Pumlumon and the Cambrian Mountains — this landscape is extraordinary and largely undiscovered. I photograph it in all seasons and all weathers, from the flat calm of a June dawn to the drama of an Atlantic winter storm.

Wildlife

Red kites over the Dyfi, bottlenose dolphins in Cardigan Bay, ospreys at Cors Dyfi, grey seals hauled out on the beaches of the Lleyn — west Wales is one of Britain's finest wildlife destinations. I photograph its fauna with patience and respect for the subject.

Portrait

Individuals, families, couples and professionals. I offer both studio sessions in Borth and location portraits anywhere in Ceredigion and Powys. My approach is relaxed and unhurried — the best portraits emerge when subjects forget the camera is there.

Photography walks along the Wales Coast Path

Throughout spring, summer and autumn I run a programme of themed walks along the Ceredigion section of the Wales Coast Path. Each walk is timed to a specific subject: wildflower meadows in May, seabird colonies in June, autumn light on the estuary in October.

All walks depart from Borth or Aberystwyth and return the same day. Booking opens seasonally — get in touch to be added to the mailing list.

What clients say

Janet photographed our wedding at Nanteos Mansion last September. She was completely unobtrusive throughout the day, yet somehow captured every important moment. The final gallery was delivered ahead of schedule and the quality was extraordinary. We have ordered three large prints for our sitting room.

Sarah & Rhys Davies Wedding Photography, Aberystwyth

I attended Janet’s full-day landscape masterclass with modest expectations. Eight hours later I understood my camera in a way I never had after years of fumbling through manuals. Her teaching is patient, precise and genuinely inspiring. The Lightroom session in the evening was the best part.

Martin Ashworth Landscape Masterclass, Borth

We commissioned Janet for a family portrait on Borth beach to mark our parents’ golden anniversary. She was brilliant with three generations and four grandchildren — calm, funny, and utterly professional. The prints we ordered are hanging in every sibling’s house now. Priceless.

The Griffiths Family Family Portrait, Borth

I purchased a large canvas of “Atlantic Storm” for my home office. The print quality is remarkable — the tonal range in those dark clouds is something I have never seen reproduced so faithfully on canvas. It arrived perfectly packaged and ready to hang. Will buy again.

Tom Butterfield Canvas Print, Online Order

Janet covered our annual community farming show for the second year running. She knows everyone by name, blends into the background effortlessly, and always returns with images that tell the real story of the day. The committee could not recommend her more highly.

Ceredigion County Show Committee Event Photography, Annual Show

I joined the coastal photography walk on a whim while on holiday near Aberystwyth. Janet completely changed how I look at light. I have been back twice since for the full-day masterclass. It is, without question, the best money I have ever spent on my photography.

Finding me in Borth

I am based in Borth (Y Borth), a linear village on the Ceredigion coast between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth. The village sits on a narrow shingle bar between the sea and Cors Fochno peatbog — one of the largest raised bogs in Britain and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The studio is available for portrait and product work by appointment. For workshops and location shoots I cover the whole of Ceredigion and neighbouring parts of Powys, Gwynedd and Pembrokeshire.

Borth is served by the Cambrian Line railway from Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury, making it fully accessible without a car. Workshop participants travelling by public transport are very welcome — please mention this when booking.

Studio Address Borth, Ceredigion, SY24 — by appointment
Coverage Area Ceredigion, Powys, Gwynedd, Pembrokeshire

A week with the grey seals of Ceredigion

Mid-February is a quiet time on the coast, but the grey seals do not know that. I spent five mornings this week on a stretch of beach I will not name, watching a colony of about sixty animals haul out with the falling tide…

Frequently asked questions

Yes — I regularly work across west and mid Wales, including Pembrokeshire, Powys, Gwynedd and the Brecon Beacons. For shoots more than 60 miles from Borth I charge a mileage rate at the standard HMRC advisory rate, plus accommodation where an overnight stay is required. Please enquire with your location and I will provide a full written quote.

For portrait and event commissions I deliver a full edited gallery within 28 days of the shoot date, typically sooner. Wedding galleries take up to six weeks due to the volume of images. I send a small selection of preview images within one week of every shoot so you have something to look forward to while editing is completed.

For landscape and coastal work, poor weather is rarely a reason to cancel — storms and dramatic skies often produce the best images. For portrait and event work I will contact you 48 hours in advance if the forecast suggests rescheduling would be worthwhile. Outdoor portrait sessions can be rescheduled once at no additional charge.

Any camera at all. I work with participants using DSLR, mirrorless, bridge, compact and film cameras. The fundamentals of composition, light and timing apply to all systems. The only thing I ask is that you bring your camera’s manual and a fully charged battery. Tripods are available to borrow at no extra cost.

Yes. I can produce prints in sizes from A4 to 1.2 metres wide on a range of papers and canvas substrates. If you have seen an image in the portfolio that you would like in a non-standard size, or wish to discuss framing, please get in touch. I also accept commissions for site-specific photography — for example, a location shoot to produce artwork for a specific wall or space.

Yes — workshop gift vouchers are available in any denomination and are valid for 24 months from the date of issue. They can be redeemed against any half-day walk, full-day masterclass or 1-to-1 session. Please contact me to arrange a voucher and I will send you a printed certificate by post or a PDF by email, as you prefer.

I photograph weddings throughout Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Gwynedd and Powys. I take a limited number of wedding commissions each year — typically no more than twelve — to ensure each couple receives the attention their day deserves. Enquire early; summer and early autumn dates book up quickly.

Let’s make something together

Whether you are planning a shoot, looking for a print, or interested in joining a workshop — the best first step is a conversation.
