A Local Firm with Deep Roots in West Wales

Davies & Lewis has been part of the Aberystwyth business community for over two decades. Founded by Rhodri Davies and Sian Lewis, two ACCA qualified accountants with a shared belief that local businesses deserve the same quality of professional advice as large corporations — without the impersonal treatment or London-sized fees.

We work with a wide range of clients: sole traders and freelancers who need straightforward tax help, family-run businesses that rely on us for year-round bookkeeping and payroll, and growing limited companies that need strategic advice alongside their compliance work. Whatever your situation, you deal directly with a qualified accountant — not a junior or call centre.

Ceredigion has a unique economic character. We understand the seasonal pressures on tourism and hospitality businesses along the coast, the farming and agricultural sector, the creative and digital freelancers who have made Aberystwyth their base, and the retail and service businesses that serve our community. That local knowledge informs everything we do.

Our approach is straightforward: clear advice, plain language, no hidden charges, and a proactive service that flags issues before they become problems. We are proud members of ACCA and operate in full compliance with HMRC's Making Tax Digital requirements.

What Sets Davies & Lewis Apart

There are plenty of accountants in Wales. Here is why clients from Aberystwyth to Cardigan choose to stay with us year after year.

You Deal With a Qualified Accountant

Every client at Davies & Lewis is looked after by a fully ACCA qualified accountant. You will not be passed to a trainee or a call handler. When you ring, the person who picks up knows your accounts.

Fixed Fees Agreed Upfront

We agree a fixed annual fee before we start work. No meter running, no surprise bills at year end. You know exactly what you are paying and exactly what you get. Simple, fair, and transparent.

Proactive Tax Planning Year-Round

We do not wait for deadlines. Throughout the year we review your position and alert you to planning opportunities. Tax efficiency is something we work on continuously, not just in January.

Deep Knowledge of West Wales Business

We have spent two decades working with Ceredigion businesses — tourism, retail, agriculture, the creative sector, and professional services. That local context shapes every piece of advice we give.

Fully MTD-Ready

Making Tax Digital is reshaping how businesses report to HMRC. We have been MTD-compliant since its introduction and guide all our clients through digital record-keeping requirements without fuss.

Welsh-Speaking Service Available

Rhodri and Sian are fluent Welsh speakers. If you prefer to discuss your accounts, tax position, or business matters entirely in Welsh, we are happy to accommodate that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from clients and prospective clients. If you cannot find the answer you need, please do not hesitate to ring or email us.

Our initial consultation is always free of charge and without obligation, so you have nothing to lose by getting in touch.

Ask a Question
How much do your accountancy services cost?

All our fees are fixed and agreed in writing before we start work. The cost depends on the complexity of your affairs and the services required. A straightforward self assessment return for a sole trader typically starts from £350 per year. Limited company accounts and tax packages are quoted individually. We offer monthly payment by direct debit to spread the cost.

Yes. Late filing incurs automatic HMRC penalties, but we can help minimise the damage. We will prepare and submit your outstanding returns as quickly as possible, liaise with HMRC on your behalf, and where appropriate appeal penalties if there are reasonable grounds for doing so. The most important thing is to act now rather than delay further.

For VAT-registered businesses, Making Tax Digital requires digital record-keeping and submission via compatible software. We recommend Xero for most businesses and can set it up, train you, and support you throughout. For non-VAT clients, we are flexible — some clients use spreadsheets, others use software. We will advise what works best for your circumstances.

It is simpler than most people expect. Once you appoint us, we contact your previous accountant professionally to request your records and notify HMRC of the agent change. You simply sign a form of authority — we handle everything else. There is no need to be concerned about causing offence or awkwardness; it is a normal part of business life.

Yes. Both Rhodri Davies and Sian Lewis are fluent Welsh speakers and are happy to conduct all meetings, correspondence, and advice entirely in Welsh should you prefer. Simply let us know your preference when you first make contact and we will accommodate it throughout our relationship.

As a sole trader you must keep records of all income and business expenses for at least five years after the self assessment deadline. This includes sales invoices, purchase receipts, bank statements, mileage logs, and any other relevant documents. We provide all new clients with a simple record-keeping guide tailored to their type of business.

This is one of the most common questions we receive and the honest answer is: it depends. For many freelancers and small businesses, a limited company can offer tax advantages once profits exceed a certain level. However, it also brings additional compliance obligations. We will model both scenarios based on your specific income, expenses, and plans before making a recommendation.
