Hand Stripping
2-4 hours

Traditional technique for wire-coated breeds. Preserves natural texture, colour, and weather resistance of the coat.

  • Dead coat removal by hand
  • Maintains natural coat texture
  • Breed standard finishing
  • Full bath and nail trim
  • Ear and sanitary grooming

Hand stripping is a specialist skill for breeds with wiry coats like Border Terriers, Wire Fox Terriers, Schnauzers, and Welsh Terriers. Unlike clipping, which cuts the hair and softens the texture over time, hand stripping removes the dead outer coat to allow the new, vibrant coat to grow through naturally. The result is a coat that looks, feels, and functions as nature intended.

What our Pembrokeshire families say

Our Cockapoo always comes back looking absolutely gorgeous. The attention to detail is amazing and she is always so happy and relaxed when we pick her up. Would not go anywhere else in Haverfordwest.

Sarah T.
Haverfordwest -- Cockapoo

Been bringing my two Westies here for years now. They are always treated with such care and patience. The grooming is excellent and the prices are very fair. Highly recommend to anyone in Pembrokeshire.

Robert J.
Milford Haven -- Two Westies

My anxious rescue dog was terrified of groomers until we found Bowen's. The patience and gentleness shown was incredible. For the first time ever, he actually seemed to enjoy his groom. Absolute lifesaver.

Emma L.
Narberth -- Rescue Lurcher cross

Brought our Newfoundland in for a de-shed and she looks incredible. So much fur came off and our house is already so much cleaner. Professional, friendly, and clearly loves dogs. Five stars every time.

Owain D.
Pembroke Dock -- Newfoundland

Everything you need to know

Most dogs benefit from a full groom every 6-8 weeks, with a bath and tidy in between if needed. Breeds with fast-growing coats like Poodle crosses may need grooming every 4-6 weeks. Short-coated breeds can often go longer between visits. We will advise you on the best schedule for your specific dog.
Absolutely. We work with nervous dogs regularly and pride ourselves on our patient, gentle approach. We take things at your dog's pace, use positive reinforcement, and never force anything. Many previously anxious dogs have become regular, happy visitors. Let us know when you book and we will allow extra time.
We recommend starting from 12 weeks old, once your puppy has had their initial vaccinations. Early grooming experiences are crucial for building confidence. Our puppy package is specifically designed to be a gentle, positive introduction to the grooming process. The earlier you start, the easier grooming will be for the rest of their life.
We always prioritise your dog's comfort and welfare. If a coat is severely matted, the kindest option is often to clip the mats out rather than attempt to brush them out, which is painful. We will discuss all options with you honestly. There may be an additional charge for heavily matted coats due to the extra time and care required.
No, you are welcome to drop your dog off and collect them when they are ready. In fact, most dogs settle better once their owner has left. We will give you a time estimate when you drop off and can message you on Facebook when your dog is ready for collection. You are welcome to stay if you prefer, of course.
We use professional-grade, pH-balanced shampoos and conditioners designed specifically for dogs. We stock a range of products for different coat types and skin conditions, including options for sensitive skin, medicated shampoos, and de-shedding treatments. If your dog has any allergies or skin conditions, please let us know and we will choose products accordingly.
The easiest way is to message us on Facebook. We respond quickly and can usually find an appointment within a week or two. Regular clients can book their next appointment at the end of each visit to secure their preferred time slot. We are based in Haverfordwest, conveniently located for the whole of Pembrokeshire.

Keep your dog looking their best between visits

Brushing Between Grooms

Regular brushing is the single most important thing you can do between professional grooming appointments. It prevents matting, distributes natural oils, removes loose hair, and gives you a chance to check your dog's skin for any issues.

  • 1 Brush curly-coated breeds (Poodle crosses, Bichons) at least every other day to prevent matting
  • 2 Use a slicker brush for curly coats, a bristle brush for smooth coats, and a rake for double-coated breeds
  • 3 Pay extra attention to behind ears, under armpits, and around the collar area where mats form first
  • 4 Make brushing a positive experience with treats and praise, especially for puppies

Bathing at Home

While professional bathing is always recommended, there are times when a quick wash at home is needed. Here is how to do it properly without causing coat damage.

  • 1 Always use dog-specific shampoo. Human products have the wrong pH and can irritate your dog's skin
  • 2 Rinse thoroughly. Shampoo residue causes itching, flaking, and dull coats
  • 3 Dry your dog completely, especially in winter. A damp coat is a breeding ground for skin problems
  • 4 Do not bathe too frequently. Once a month at most for home baths. Over-bathing strips natural oils

Ear Care

Ear infections are one of the most common health issues in dogs, especially floppy-eared breeds. Regular ear checking and cleaning can prevent most problems.

  • 1 Check ears weekly for redness, odour, or discharge. Any of these could signal infection
  • 2 After swimming or bath time, dry ears gently but thoroughly. Moisture trapped in the ear canal causes problems
  • 3 Use a vet-approved ear cleaner if needed. Never insert cotton buds into the ear canal
  • 4 Spaniels, Poodles, and floppy-eared breeds need extra attention. We clean ears at every grooming visit

Nail Maintenance

Overgrown nails are more than just a cosmetic issue. They affect your dog's posture, comfort, and can even lead to pain and joint problems over time.

  • 1 If you hear clicking on hard floors, the nails are too long and need trimming
  • 2 Most dogs need nail trims every 4-6 weeks. Dogs that walk on pavements may need less
  • 3 Be careful of the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail). If in doubt, leave it to us
  • 4 Dew claws do not wear down naturally and must be trimmed. Check these regularly

Seasonal Coat Care

Living in Pembrokeshire means dealing with mud, rain, sea spray, and seasonal coat changes. Here is how to manage your dog's coat through the Welsh seasons.

  • 1 Spring and autumn bring heavy shedding in double-coated breeds. Book a de-shedding treatment to help manage it
  • 2 After beach walks, rinse salt water out of the coat. Salt dries skin and damages hair
  • 3 In winter, keep the fur between paw pads short to prevent ice balls and mud clumps forming
  • 4 Never shave a double-coated breed in summer. Their coat actually insulates them from heat as well as cold
