Common Questions, Answered

Everything you might want to know before bringing your garment in for alteration.

How long will my alteration take?
Most standard alterations — hemming, taking in or letting out seams, zip replacements — are completed within 3 to 5 working days. More complex work such as full suit alterations, wedding dresses or structural changes may take a little longer. Alan will give you a realistic collection date when you drop the garment off. If you need the work done urgently, ask about the express 48-hour service.
Do I need to make an appointment?
For most standard alterations and repairs, you are welcome to walk in during opening hours without an appointment. For bridal alterations, wedding dresses or complex formal wear fittings, it is best to call ahead to arrange a convenient time so Alan can give your garment the attention it deserves without any time pressure.
Is the initial consultation free?
Yes, completely. Bring your garment in and Alan will assess it, discuss what you need, and provide a firm quote at no cost and with no obligation. You only pay if you decide to go ahead with the work.
Can all garments be altered?
Most garments can be altered to some degree, but there are exceptions. Some alterations are limited by the construction of the garment — for example, it is not always possible to significantly enlarge a garment if there is insufficient seam allowance. Similarly, some stretch fabrics and bonded constructions present challenges. Alan will always assess your garment honestly and advise you on what is achievable before any work is carried out.
What should I bring when I come in?
Bring the garment you would like altered, and ideally wear or bring the shoes, undergarments or accessories you intend to wear with it. This is particularly important for hem adjustments, where the shoe heel height directly affects the correct finished length. For suit alterations, bringing the entire suit (jacket and trousers) even if only one part needs altering helps Alan assess how the overall outfit will look.
Do you work on designer or high-value clothing?
Yes. Alan regularly works on designer garments, high-quality tailoring and valuable pieces. He understands that these items require particular care and applies the same meticulous approach regardless of the garment's value. If you are unsure, bring it in for a no-obligation assessment — Alan will tell you honestly if he has any concerns.
Do you offer a collection and delivery service?
At present, garments need to be dropped off and collected at the workshop in Aberystwyth. This allows Alan to properly assess and fit the garment in person, which is essential for achieving the best results. If you are travelling from further afield in Ceredigion and would like to arrange a specific appointment time to minimise your journey, please get in touch to discuss.
How much will my alteration cost?
Pricing depends on the garment, the fabric, and the nature of the work required. The pricing guide on this page gives a general indication, but every job is quoted individually. Alan will give you a firm, fixed quote before any work starts — the price you are quoted is the price you pay. There are no hidden extras.
What if I am not satisfied with the finished work?
Alan stands behind his work. If something is not quite right when you collect your garment, he will address it without charge. This rarely happens — Alan checks his work carefully before contacting customers for collection — but if you are not completely happy, simply say so and it will be sorted.
