When you choose an NICEIC Approved Contractor, you have the assurance that your electrical work is in safe hands.
18th Edition BS7671
All our work is carried out to the latest 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671:2018+A2:2022). This is the standard that governs electrical installations throughout the UK, covering everything from cable selection to earthing arrangements and protective devices.
Part P Building Regulations
As a registered competent person scheme member, Afan Electrical can self-certify domestic electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations — meaning you don't need to apply separately to your local council. We handle all the paperwork.

Property Rewiring in Aberystwyth & Ceredigion

Rewiring is one of the most important electrical jobs you can undertake in your home. Old wiring — particularly rubber-insulated cable from before the 1970s — can become dangerous over time. A full rewire brings your property up to modern standards, improving safety and often reducing your insurance premiums.

  • Complete property rewires for houses, bungalows, cottages and flats
  • Partial rewires targeting specific circuits or areas
  • New consumer unit fitted as part of every full rewire
  • All cabling to 18th Edition specification using LSF and LSOH cables
  • New socket outlets, light switches and wiring accessories throughout
  • Electrical Installation Certificate issued on completion
  • Part P notification to local building control included
  • Available for occupied properties — work planned in stages where needed
When Does a Property Need Rewiring?
Signs that your wiring may need attention include: round-pin plug sockets, brown or black rubber-sheathed cables, a fuse box with rewirable fuses (rather than circuit breakers), flickering lights, or a failed or borderline EICR report. If your home is more than 25 years old and has never been rewired, an inspection is strongly recommended.
Never Attempt DIY Rewiring
Electrical work carried out by an unqualified person is illegal under Part P of the Building Regulations and can void your home insurance. All rewiring work must be carried out by a qualified, registered electrician and certificated on completion.

Fuse Board Replacement & Consumer Unit Upgrades

Your consumer unit (fuse board) is the nerve centre of your home's electrical system. An old or outdated unit may lack RCD protection, which is now required in most domestic installations. Upgrading to a modern consumer unit is one of the most cost-effective safety improvements you can make.

  • Replacement of old fuse boxes with modern consumer units
  • Split-load consumer units with RCD protection throughout
  • RCBO-protected units providing individual circuit protection
  • Surge protection devices (SPDs) for sensitive equipment
  • Metal-clad consumer units for fire safety
  • All work notified under Part P Building Regulations
  • Minor Works or Installation Certificate on completion
Why Upgrade Your Consumer Unit?
Modern consumer units with RCD protection can prevent fatal electric shocks by cutting the power in as little as 40 milliseconds when a fault is detected. Many home insurance providers now ask whether you have an updated fuse board, and mortgage lenders may flag an outdated unit during a survey.

EV Charger Installation
for Home & Business

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular across Wales, and having a dedicated home charger is far safer and more convenient than using a standard three-pin socket. Afan Electrical is an OZEV-authorised installer, meaning we can install approved home charge points and help you apply for any eligible government grants.

Home Wall Box
7kW tethered or untethered wall box for overnight charging. Charges a typical EV from empty to full in 6-8 hours. Far quicker and safer than a three-pin socket.
Smart Chargers
App-controlled chargers that allow you to schedule charging during off-peak tariff periods, reducing your running costs significantly.
Workplace Charging
Multiple charge points for business car parks, with load management systems to share available capacity across units efficiently.
Solar Integration
Link your EV charger to your solar panel system to charge using surplus generated electricity, further reducing your energy costs.
OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant
Eligible homeowners and renters with dedicated off-street parking may qualify for a grant towards the cost of installing a home EV charger. As an OZEV-authorised installer, we handle the grant application on your behalf — reducing the upfront cost of installation. Contact us to find out whether you are eligible.
EV Charging Solutions
OZEV authorised • All major brands supported
Compatible with all major EV brands
We install chargers compatible with every major electric vehicle on the UK market, including all Tesla models (with the appropriate adaptor), Nissan Leaf, BMW i-series, Volkswagen ID range, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia EV6, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and all other Type 2 socket vehicles.

Testing, Inspection & Certification

Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) are now a legal requirement for private landlords in Wales. We also carry out homebuyer electrical surveys, periodic inspections, and portable appliance testing for businesses throughout Ceredigion.

01

Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)

A thorough inspection and testing of the fixed electrical installation within a property, resulting in a written report classifying any defects found. Required every five years (or at each change of tenancy) for private rental properties in Wales under the Renting Homes (Wales) Act 2016.

02

Homebuyer Electrical Survey

Buying a new home? An independent electrical survey before you complete can identify potential issues that a standard mortgage survey may miss. We provide a detailed written report on the condition of all fixed wiring, consumer unit, earthing and bonding arrangements.

03

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

A legal requirement for businesses to maintain electrical appliances in a safe condition. We carry out PAT testing for offices, workshops, holiday lets and any other commercial premises, issuing labels and a written register of all items tested.

04

Landlord Safety Certificates

We work with private landlords across Ceredigion to ensure their rental properties remain compliant. We can hold your records and send reminders when your EICR is due for renewal, taking one more job off your plate.

05

Emergency Lighting Testing

Commercial and public buildings are required to have emergency lighting that is regularly tested and documented. We carry out monthly and annual testing, maintenance, and issue written records in compliance with BS5266.

06

Remedial Works

If your EICR returns as unsatisfactory (C1 or C2 codes), we can carry out the necessary remedial works to bring your installation up to standard and issue a satisfactory report. We never recommend unnecessary work.

Lighting Installations & Upgrades

Good lighting transforms a space. Whether you are looking to upgrade your existing fittings to energy-efficient LEDs, add downlighters to a new extension, or install external security lighting, Afan Electrical can design and install a lighting scheme to meet your needs and budget.

  • LED downlighter installation throughout homes and commercial premises
  • Feature and decorative lighting circuits
  • Dimmer switch installation and smart lighting controls
  • PIR-activated security lighting for driveways and outbuildings
  • Garden lighting — low-voltage and mains
  • Floodlighting for commercial and agricultural properties
  • Loft and utility room lighting
  • Bathroom lighting to IP rating requirements
Switch to LED and Cut Your Electricity Bill
Replacing halogen downlighters with LED equivalents can reduce lighting energy consumption by up to 80%. LEDs also last significantly longer — typically 25,000 hours versus 2,000 hours for halogen — so the savings stack up quickly. We can carry out a lighting audit and advise on the most cost-effective upgrade path for your property.

Afan Electrical rewired our Victorian terrace in Aberystwyth — a big job that they approached with complete professionalism. The work was tidy, they worked around our young children, and the price was exactly what they quoted. Absolutely delighted with the result. Would recommend without hesitation.

As a landlord with several properties in the area, I need an electrician I can rely on. Afan Electrical carry out all my EICR reports and any remedial works identified. They're always prompt, professional and their paperwork is always in order. Exactly what a landlord needs.

David O.
Landlord, Aberystwyth

We had an EV charger installed at home and at our business premises in Aberaeron. The whole process was smooth from start to finish, and they handled the OZEV grant application for both. The chargers have been working perfectly for six months now. Excellent service.

Claire & Huw R.
Aberaeron, Ceredigion

Our old fuse box was condemned during a house purchase survey. Afan Electrical replaced the consumer unit within a week of us calling. Fast, tidy, affordable and we received the certificate the same day. Could not have asked for more — they saved our house purchase.

Tom & Louise P.
Cardigan, Ceredigion

Used Afan Electrical to rewire a holiday cottage we'd bought that hadn't been touched since the 1960s. The level of care and attention they brought to the job was brilliant — they even worked through a weekend to have us ready for our first booking. Genuine stars.

Rhiannon J.
New Quay, Ceredigion

We had Afan Electrical carry out a full LED lighting upgrade across our retail unit in Aberystwyth. They designed the layout, sourced the fittings and completed the work over a weekend so we didn't lose any trading time. The energy savings have been incredible — highly recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a full house rewire cost in Wales?

The cost of a rewire depends on the size of the property, the number of circuits required, and the accessibility of cables. As a rough guide, a typical three-bedroom house rewire in Ceredigion tends to range between £3,500 and £6,000 including the consumer unit. We always provide a detailed written quote before any work begins, so you know exactly what to expect.

How often does a rental property need an EICR in Wales?

Under the Renting Homes (Wales) Act, private landlords in Wales are required to have an Electrical Installation Condition Report carried out every five years, or at each change of tenancy if shorter. The EICR must be provided to new tenants before they move in, and to existing tenants within 14 days of request. Failure to comply can result in significant fines.

Do I need a fuse board replacement?

Common signs that a consumer unit replacement may be required include: old rewirable fuse carriers rather than modern circuit breakers, no RCD protection, a failed EICR citing the consumer unit, or a request from your insurance company or mortgage lender. We can carry out an inspection and provide an honest assessment at no charge.

Can I get a grant for an EV charger in Wales?

The UK Government's OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant currently provides eligible homeowners and renters with dedicated off-street parking a contribution towards the cost of installing a home wall box charger. As an OZEV-authorised installer, we handle the grant application on your behalf. Eligibility criteria apply; contact us to find out whether you qualify.

What does NICEIC registration mean for me?

NICEIC Approved Contractor status means the electrician has been assessed for technical competence and business standards by the UK's leading electrical safety body. Work carried out by an NICEIC contractor is eligible for the NICEIC Platinum Promise — if something goes wrong with the installation within six years, the NICEIC will arrange for the work to be rectified at no cost to you.

How long does a consumer unit replacement take?

A straightforward consumer unit replacement in a typical domestic property usually takes between four and eight hours, including all testing and certification. The power will need to be off for the majority of this time. We always aim to complete the work in a single day so that you are not left without electricity overnight.

Are your quotes free and binding?

Yes, all our quotations are provided completely free of charge with no obligation to proceed. For straightforward jobs we can often quote over the phone; for larger works we visit the property first. Our written quotes are fixed-price — we will not charge more than the agreed amount unless unforeseen work is discovered and discussed with you beforehand.
