Our Story

A Bunkhouse Built for the Mountains

Sleeping Giant Bunkhouse and Campsite sits in Pen-y-Cae, deep in the Brecon Beacons National Park — one of Wales' most spectacular landscapes.

Trading as Absolute Adventure, we have been welcoming walkers, climbers, cyclists, school groups, stag parties, and families to our slice of the Beacons for years. This is not a hotel. It is a bunkhouse: practical, honest, and genuinely comfortable. The kind of place where muddy boots are part of the furniture and nobody judges your state when you roll in from a day on the Beacons.

Our bunkhouse can sleep up to 26 guests across a mix of dormitory and private rooms. Our campsite sits alongside it, with space for tents, campervans, and caravans — and yes, open fires are permitted.

  • Brecon Beacons National Park location — waterfalls, caves and trails on the doorstep
  • Dormitory and private rooms for individuals, couples and groups
  • Full self-catering kitchen and welcoming common room with wood burner
  • Campsite with open fires, tent and campervan pitches
  • Exclusive group hire available for the whole bunkhouse

Common Room

At the heart of Sleeping Giant is our common room — the place where the day's adventures get retold, route plans for tomorrow get argued over, and tired legs are rested in front of a proper fire. There is nothing quite like a wood-burning stove after a soaking on the Beacons.

The common room is open to all guests from check-in until late evening. It serves equally well as a group briefing space, a meal-planning hub, or simply somewhere warm to sit with a brew and a book.

Brecon Beacons Mountain Biking

The Brecon Beacons and surrounding Valleys are renowned for mountain biking. The Afan Forest Park to the south offers world-class trail centre riding, while the Beacons themselves deliver wild, technical off-road riding on natural terrain. Walking & Hillwalking

The Brecon Beacons are prime walking country. Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain, is accessible from multiple trailheads. The Beacons Way long-distance trail passes through the area. Nearby valley walks take in rivers, woodland and ancient hill forts. Our common room has OS maps for the local area, and we are happy to suggest routes to suit your ability and the day's conditions.

Rock Climbing

The limestone escarpments and gritstone outcrops of the Brecon Beacons provide excellent single-pitch and multi-pitch climbing. Carreg Yr Ogof and Pont Esgob are popular crags within easy reach. The area attracts climbers of all abilities, from novices learning the ropes to experienced leaders seeking trad routes on clean Welsh rock.

What Our Guests Say

Testimonials

Walkers, cyclists, groups, and families who have stayed with us at Sleeping Giant. Their words, not ours.

"We brought a group of 18 walkers here for a long weekend on the Beacons. The bunkhouse was spotless, the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed, and the drying room saved us after a particularly wet day on Pen y Fan. We will be back without question."
Sarah M. Walking Club Organiser, Bristol
"Fantastic location. We camped here with the kids for three nights and had an open fire every evening. The showers were hot, the pitches were level, and Dan yr Ogof just down the road kept the children entertained for a whole day. Proper Welsh camping."
Tom R. Family camper, Cardiff
"We booked the whole bunkhouse for our mountain biking club. The secure bike storage was genuinely useful, the showers were excellent after long days in the saddle, and the common room with the wood burner was perfect for evenings. The location is superb for getting to both the Beacons and Afan."
James W. Mountain Biking Club, Birmingham
"We used this as a base for a Duke of Edinburgh Silver expedition. The hosts were incredibly helpful, the rooms were clean, and having a proper kitchen for the group made a big difference. The location is perfect for DofE routes through the Beacons. Highly recommended for school groups."
Laura T. DofE Coordinator, Swansea
"Absolutely cracking stag weekend. Booked the whole bunkhouse for 12 of us, spent two days in the hills doing organised activities and came back to a warm common room each evening. No complaints whatsoever. The setting is stunning and the site is well run."
Dan P. Stag weekend, London
"We camped here with two vans for five nights. The hook-up was fine, the showers were proper hot showers (not the lukewarm dribble you get at some campsites), and the setting in the Swansea Valley with the Beacons all around is genuinely beautiful. We walked to Sgwd yr Eira from here — an unforgettable day."
Helen & Mark C. Motorhome travellers, Somerset

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you arrive at Sleeping Giant. If your question is not answered below, please get in touch directly.

Bed linen hire is available and must be arranged in advance when making your booking. Many guests prefer to bring their own sleeping bag. Towels are not provided — please bring your own. If you forget, a small selection of travel towels may be available to purchase or borrow on site.

Yes. Open fires are permitted on the campsite in designated areas. We are one of the few sites in the Brecon Beacons that allows open fires, and we think that is one of the things that makes us special. Firewood can be purchased on site. Please follow our fire safety guidelines, keep fires within designated fire pits, and ensure fires are fully extinguished before you retire for the night. Fire lighters and kindling are available to purchase on arrival.

Yes. The whole bunkhouse can be booked on an exclusive hire basis for groups of up to 26. This gives your group sole use of all sleeping rooms, the kitchen, common room, drying room, and facilities for the duration of your stay. Exclusive hire is popular with walking clubs, stag and hen parties, school groups, and corporate teams. Please contact us directly to discuss dates, group size, and pricing for exclusive hire.

Yes. We welcome campervans, motorhomes, and caravans on the campsite. We have a number of hardstanding and semi-hardstanding pitches suitable for larger vehicles, and electric hook-up is available on selected pitches. Please confirm your vehicle type and dimensions when booking to ensure we allocate you the most suitable pitch. Chemical waste disposal is available on site.

We welcome one-night stays at the bunkhouse and campsite, though two nights or more allows you to really make the most of the location. A minimum stay of two nights may apply during peak periods including school holidays, bank holiday weekends, and when exclusive group hire is in place. Please check availability when enquiring and we will confirm the minimum stay for your chosen dates.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome on the campsite and may be permitted in certain bunkhouse rooms by prior arrangement. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times on site. Please inform us at the time of booking if you are bringing a dog so we can allocate an appropriate pitch or room. Dogs are not permitted in the kitchen or common room. There is excellent dog-friendly walking from the site into the Brecon Beacons.

Mobile signal varies by network in the Swansea Valley. Some networks have reasonable 4G coverage at the site; others may be limited to 2G or no signal in spots. We provide free Wi-Fi throughout the bunkhouse and the common room area which gives reliable internet access. If reliable mobile connectivity is important for your group — for example for group leaders — we recommend checking coverage on your network before arriving, or ensuring you have a Wi-Fi calling option enabled.

The best way to book is to contact us directly using the enquiry form below, by telephone on 01639 730518 or 07760 378846, or by email at enquiries@absoluteadventure.co.uk. We will confirm availability and send you a booking summary. A deposit is typically required to secure your booking, with the balance due prior to or on arrival. For group and exclusive hire bookings, a larger deposit may be required. Full payment details will be confirmed at the time of booking.

We cater well for mountain bikers and touring cyclists. We have secure, covered bike storage for bunkhouse guests. A basic bike wash-down area is available. The drying room is useful for wet kit after a long day on the trails. The Afan Argoed Forest Park — one of Wales' finest trail centre destinations — is approximately 35 minutes by car, and there is excellent riding directly from the site into the Brecon Beacons for those who prefer natural terrain. Please let us know at booking if you are cycling so we can ensure the bike store is ready for your arrival.

The village of Abercrave is close by and has local facilities including a convenience store. The larger town of Ystradgynlais — approximately 8 miles south — has supermarkets, a pharmacy, and a range of shops for stocking up on provisions before arrival. There are pubs and restaurants in both Ystradgynlais and the surrounding villages. We recommend picking up your supplies before arriving as the immediate vicinity of the site is rural. We are happy to advise on local pubs and eating options when you arrive.
